HP DeskJet Plus 4140 All-in-One Printer

I recently bought this printer for my classroom. When trying to connect it to the wifi i recieved a message that says, "your computer is connected to a wireless network which uses enterprise level authentication (802.1x or WPA-Enterprise). This type of authentication is not supported by this HP software. Seek HP support for help reconfiguring the printer to work with this authentication"

Hi @Elli25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your HP DeskJet Plus 4140 All-in-One Printer does not support enterprise-level Wi-Fi authentication protocols like 802.1x or WPA-Enterprise, which are commonly used in schools, universities, and corporate networks. This is why you're seeing the error message during setup. And this can only be fixed by your IT.

What You Can Do:

Option 1: Use a Guest or Personal Wi-Fi Network

  • Check if your school provides a guest Wi-Fi network that uses WPA2-Personal (with a simple password).
  • If available, connect your printer to that network using the HP Smart app.

Option 2: Use a USB Connection

  • Connect the printer directly to your classroom computer using a USB cable.
  • This bypasses the need for Wi-Fi entirely and is ideal for local printing.

Option 3: Use a Mobile Hotspot (if allowed)

  • Temporarily connect the printer to a mobile hotspot (from your phone or a portable device) using WPA2-Personal.
  • This allows you to complete setup and print wirelessly from devices connected to the same hotspot.

Option 4: Use HP Smart App with Direct Wi-Fi

  • Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer:
    • Press the Wi-Fi Direct button on the printer (or check the control panel).
    • Connect your computer or phone to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network (e.g., DIRECT-xx-HP4140).
    • Open the HP Smart app and print directly.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
