Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

Hello, My MAC, Sonoma 14.6.1, will no longer send to my HP printers. I have a HP OfficeJet 8010 series and a HP Office JetPro 8720. I have them both showing that they are idle and ready to print, green signal. When I send the command to print, the signal then switches to 'In Use, Last Used', yellow signal. Neither printer will print, both reading the same.

I also tried to print from my ThinkPad X1, Windows up to date, and it took 5 minutes to print a page, but it finally printed.

I tried uninstalled the printers, rebooted the printers and reinstalled the printers, on my MAC, still didn't work.

I can print from my iPhone no problem.

I can't figure out the problem.

Hi @dsidjanski,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP printers are having issues with macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, though they are working from your iPhone and eventually from the ThinkPad. Here are a few steps to help troubleshoot this issue.

Check macOS Printer Driver Compatibility

  • Update printer drivers: Ensure the drivers for both the HP OfficeJet 8010 series and HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 are up to date. macOS Sonoma may require the latest drivers for full compatibility.
    • Visit HP's support page to download the latest drivers or firmware for your printer models.
    • Alternatively, you can try HP Easy Start, which can automatically find and install the correct driver.
  • AirPrint compatibility: Ensure your printers are AirPrint-compatible and macOS is using the correct protocol. Check this by going to System Settings → Printers & Scanners, selecting the printer, and verifying if AirPrint is being used.

Reset the Printing System on macOS

  • Sometimes, the printing system may need a full reset to clear out any conflicting settings:
    • Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click (or Ctrl+click) in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
    • This will remove all printers. Reinstall the HP printers after resetting.

Check for macOS Print Queues

  • Ensure there are no print jobs stuck in the queue.
    • Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
    • Select your printer and click on Open Print Queue. Clear out any pending jobs and retry.

Network and Printer Configuration

  • Wireless connection: Confirm both your Mac and the printers are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If your network is set up with multiple bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), ensure the devices are on the same band.
  • Wi-Fi Direct: Disable Wi-Fi Direct on the printers if you are connected to a local Wi-Fi network, as this can cause conflicts.

Test Another Protocol on macOS

  • If your printers support Ethernet, try connecting them directly to your router with a wired connection to see if that helps.
  • For wireless printing, verify that the Bonjour service is enabled on your network, as macOS uses this protocol to discover network printers.

Check for Print Spooler Issues on macOS

  • Try restarting the macOS print spooler by running the following commands in Terminal:

sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
sudo launchctl start org.cups.cupsd

  • After running these commands, try printing again.

Update macOS and Printers Firmware

  • macOS updates: Check for any updates for macOS Sonoma, as bug fixes may improve compatibility with printers.
  • Printer firmware: Check HP’s support website to ensure that both printers have the latest firmware updates installed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
