HP Color LaserJet Professional CP5225n Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have three CP5225 printers displaying this error and then restarting. The Macs (Ventura), print via a print server. The print server (PaperCut) has been checked and it says the jobs have printed but every time the network cable is connected the printer tries to print, displays the '79 Service error Turn off then on' error, then restarts.

I have tested printing directly to the printer with USB cable and there is no issue.

The Firmware version is 20140619. I have checked HP for an update but there is nothing there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @NESC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "79 Service Error Turn off then on" on HP printers often indicates a firmware issue or a problem with a print job that is causing the printer to crash. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue for your HP CP5225 printers:

1. Clear Print Queue

  • On the Macs (Ventura), open the print queue for each CP5225 printer.
  • Delete all pending print jobs. Sometimes, a corrupt print job can cause the printer to encounter errors.

2. Update Firmware

  • Ensure that the firmware on your HP CP5225 printers is up to date. You mentioned that the current firmware version is 20140619, which seems quite old.
  • Visit the HP Support website specifically for your HP CP5225 printer model.
  • Download and install the latest available firmware update. Firmware updates often address bugs and improve printer performance.

3. Disable Print Server or Print Server Settings

  • Sometimes print server configurations or settings can cause issues with specific printer models.
  • Temporarily disable the PaperCut print server or check its settings to ensure they are compatible with the HP CP5225 printers.
  • Test printing directly to the printers without using the print server to see if the issue persists.

4. Network Configuration

  • Check the network settings on the printers and ensure they are correctly configured to communicate with the print server and Macs.
  • Verify that the network cables are in good condition and properly connected.

5. Cold Reset the Printers

  • Perform a cold reset on the HP CP5225 printers:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Disconnect the power cable from the printer for about 30 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.
    • This can sometimes clear temporary errors and restore normal operation.

6. Test Direct USB Connection

  • You mentioned that printing via USB cable does not exhibit any issues. This suggests that the problem might be related to network communication or print server interaction.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
