Can I just used the USB cable and never connect to the internet to print from my computer?

I have just bought a HP Desk Jet 2722E and it says it can print using a USB cable but the printer must also be connected to the internet. Why?

What will happen if I print from my computer just using the USB cable with neither the computer nor the printer connected to the internet?

I never want to use the wireless connection to use the printer, just the USB cable.

I do not have reliable broadband/internet; does this mean I can not use the printer when the internet is down?

It seems there are only 'wireless' printers now, not ones that just use a USB cable to connect the computer to the printer.

The Deskjet 2722E is an HP+ printer and must have an internet connection to work.
