HP ENVY 4501 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Recently went from AT&T Fiber to Cox Fiber internet, and have been unable to connect my Envy 4501 to the wifi.

It sees the network.  I go through the wireless wizard but get the "cannot connect" error after it tries for 30 seconds or so.

What I have tried:

Have factory reset the router and the printer

Unplugged the router, shutdown/unplugged the printer, shut down my laptop.  Powered back up the router and waited for it to completely connect.   Powered on the printer and tried connecting to wifi.  Same results - sees the network but get the fail to connect error message using the setup wizard.

Error report says that MAC filtering needs to be turned off or the printer added to the devices allowed.  Router is transmitting in 2.4 and 5.0.   Accessed wifi router we site, and there is NOTHING about MAC filtering on all the options -- I've looked and re-looked .  Chatted with Cox support  - they have no way to change the MAC filtering setting.

SO FRUSTRATED.  How in 2025 is it a problem to connect a wifi device to a wifi router???

Thinking a firmware upgrade is only solution -- all firmware and drivers are current.  Am I down to trashing the printer and getting a new one?

Oh - the USB print connection works fine

@OKastro, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating this situation can be! Let's try a few more steps to get your HP ENVY 4501 connected to your new Cox Fiber internet.

Check and Separate 2.4GHz Network (VERY IMPORTANT)

The Envy 4501 only supports 2.4GHz, not 5GHz.

  • Login to the Cox Panoramic router at http://192.168.0.1 or via the Cox Panoramic app.
  • Go to WiFi Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Split the SSID names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz:

For example:

MyNetwork_2.4GHz

MyNetwork_5GHz

  • Save settings.
  • On the printer, choose only the 2.4GHz SSID in the wireless setup wizard.

Disable Security Temporarily (for testing)

  • If WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode is on, the printer may fail to authenticate.
  • Try setting the 2.4GHz network to WPA2-Personal (AES) only, not WPA3.

This may be in Advanced WiFi Security Settings in the router or app.

Check MAC Filtering / Access Control

Even if the web UI doesn’t explicitly show MAC filtering:

  • Look under Security > Access Control or Connected Devices > Device Filtering.
  • If there's an “Allow/Deny” list mode, make sure it’s not on “Block” mode.
  • Manually add the printer’s MAC address (shown in the wireless/network config page printed from the printer menu) as an allowed device if there’s an option.

Printer Firmware Check (Even if It Says "Up to Date")

Try manually downloading and flashing firmware:

  • Visit HP Envy 4501 driver page.
  • Download the firmware update utility (usually under "Firmware" section).
  • Connect printer via USB, run the utility, and force flash firmware.

Optional Test: Set Up a Mobile Hotspot

  • Set your phone's hotspot SSID and password to match your old AT&T network (same 2.4GHz SSID and WPA2 security).
  • Try connecting the printer to it.

If it works: confirms the issue is with Cox router settings.

Last Resort: Use USB or Buy a Wi-Fi Print Server

USB still works, so if replacing isn't ideal, you can:

  • Connect printer to PC via USB.
  • Share the printer on the network (Windows Printer Sharing).
  • Or buy a Wi-Fi Print Server (~$30–40), e.g., IOGEAR or TP-Link.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you.  I was able to split the 2.4 and 5.0 channels from the Panoranmic App, change the WPA to 2, and the printer connected to the 2.4 after that.
