All the troubleshooting steps fail to work. When I go to "add a new printer" and get to the point where I need to press the flashing "i" I always get this message: "there was an error and we can't complete printer set up now." So what else can I do? It seems HP support has given up and all I can do is move on from this < 2 year old printer (and this brand)?

Hi @Maggiemluk,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP ENVY 6455e printer, but before you give up, there are a few more troubleshooting steps you can try to get the printer connected to Wi-Fi. Here are some advanced steps you can take.
Perform a Hard Reset of the Printer
- Power off the printer.
- Unplug the printer from the power source for 10-15 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on.
- Try connecting again to the Wi-Fi network using the setup process.
Check Wi-Fi Network Compatibility
- Ensure your printer is connected to a 2.4 GHz network, as some printers have issues connecting to 5 GHz networks.
- Double-check that the network is not hidden (the SSID should be broadcast) and that the router is using a standard encryption method like WPA2.
- Ensure that MAC address filtering isn’t enabled on your router, as this could block the printer from connecting.
Use HP Smart App for Setup
- Download and install the HP Smart app on your smartphone or computer from the App Store (iOS) or Microsoft Store (Windows).
- Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your printer.
- The app might be more successful in detecting the printer and bypassing the issue you're seeing with the manual setup.
Manual Wi-Fi Setup via the Printer’s Control Panel
- Touch the "Wireless" icon on your printer's display (if applicable) to access the Wi-Fi settings.
- Choose "Wireless Setup Wizard" and follow the on-screen instructions to manually select your network and enter the password.
- If you can access the printer's menu, this can often be a more direct way to ensure it connects properly.
Update the Printer’s Firmware
- If possible, try updating the firmware for the printer.
- Visit HP’s official support site and search for the latest firmware version for your printer.
- You can download and install the firmware either through the HP Smart app or directly from the printer’s settings if connected to a network.
Check for Interference
- If there are many Wi-Fi devices in the area, it’s possible that interference is preventing a successful connection. Try moving the printer closer to the router or reducing interference by temporarily turning off other Wi-Fi devices.

Connect via USB First
- If Wi-Fi setup is failing, try connecting the printer to your computer via a USB cable. Once connected, use the HP Smart app to complete the Wi-Fi setup.
- After the setup, you should be able to disconnect the USB and use the printer wirelessly.
Reset the Network Settings on the Printer
- Reset the printer’s network settings to factory defaults:
- Go to the Settings menu on the printer.
- Look for Network Reset or Restore Network Defaults.
- After the reset, try setting up the Wi-Fi again from scratch.
Check Router Settings
- Ensure the router is properly configured for wireless devices. Sometimes, routers with dual-band or mesh networks may have quirks when connecting new devices. If you have a separate 2.4 GHz band, try connecting the printer to that.
- Some routers also have features that limit the number of devices or ports that can be used. Check for any features that could be limiting printer access, such as IP filtering or firewall settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
