Hi, I can’t get my M234sdw setup on my new home network. Trying to setup via WiFi as I had previously done. Cannot see if via HP smart app, and holding WiFi button on printer and then holding WPS button on router is not working. Please, looking for an answer. Thanks!
Mac is running Sonoma 14.5 (no option to select that)

Hi @Ngerger,
Thank you for your response,
To remove or reset the old network settings on your HP LaserJet M234sdw printer, you can try the following steps to restore it to Wi-Fi setup mode.
- Press the Cancel Button: If the printer is in sleep mode, press the Cancel button to wake it up.
- Hold the Information and Wireless Buttons: Press and hold the Information button for about five seconds until the control panel lights up. Then, press and hold the Wireless button along with the Cancel button simultaneously for about five seconds.
- Wait for Status Lights: After releasing the buttons, wait for the Wireless light to start blinking blue or for the Status light to pulse purple. This indicates that the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode
- Reconfigure the Network: Within two hours, use the HP Smart app or the printer software on your computer to find and connect to your new network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Reset the Printer's Network Settings:
- Turn on the printer.
- Press the Wireless button on the printer until the light starts blinking.
- Then press and hold the Cancel button (the red X) for about 5 seconds to reset the network settings.
Connect the Printer to Wi-Fi:
You can connect the printer to Wi-Fi using either the WPS method or the HP Smart app.
Using WPS:
- Ensure WPS is enabled on your router.
- Press the Wireless button on the printer to make it discoverable.
- Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router.
- The printer should automatically connect to the network. Wait for the wireless light to stop blinking.
Using HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app on your Mac if you haven’t already.
- Open the app and click on Set Up a New Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network. Make sure your Mac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to join.
- If the printer is not found, ensure it is in range of the Wi-Fi signal and powered on.
Check Printer Connectivity:
- Once the setup is complete, print a Network Configuration Page to check the connection status:
- From the printer control panel, go to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration.
Add the Printer to Your Mac:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add a printer.
- Select your HP LaserJet M234sdw from the list and click Add.
Troubleshooting:
- If you're still having trouble:
- Ensure that your router firmware is up to date.
- Restart your printer, router, and Mac.
- Try moving the printer closer to the router to improve the signal.
- Temporarily disable any firewall or security settings on your router that might block the connection.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your response Alden.
Holding the wifi button launches the "wifi mode", however, I'm not sure whether the network settings are being reset as holding the red X does nothing. After holding the red X, upon release it beeps, which makes me think it's only recognizing the press and not the hold. After the X is released, it goes back to the main mode where wifi button is still blinking.
WPS mode steps are not working, as the printer never connects after pressing the WPS button on the router.
When I try to setup via the Smart App, the app "searches for printers..." but never finds anything. Eventually it asks how I want to setup, for which I select wifi, and then the 3 step directions appear on screen "Place the printer... connection your device... Turn on location..." but of course the printer isn't yet setup on this new wifi network/new home location.
I've restarted everything, moved devices within 2 feet of each other, etc.
Feels like the printer still thinks it's on the old network, and that's the current hangup. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Hi @Ngerger,
Thank you for your response,
Here are some additional steps and tips to help you get it connected.
Additional Steps to Connect Your Printer
Factory Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes, a full factory reset can resolve persistent issues. To reset your printer:
- Turn on the printer.
- Press and hold the Wireless button until it starts blinking.
- Press and hold the Cancel button (the red X) for about 5 seconds.
- Release both buttons. The printer should reset its network settings.
Ensure Correct Mode for Connection:
- After the reset, press the Wireless button again until the light blinks rapidly. This indicates that the printer is in Wireless Setup Mode, which is essential for discovering new networks.
Using the HP Smart App:
- Make sure your Mac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to join.
- Open the HP Smart app, and select Set Up a New Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions carefully. If the printer doesn’t appear, ensure that you select the correct Wi-Fi network when prompted.
Using WPS Method:
- Ensure WPS is enabled on your router. Check the router's manual or settings.
- Press the Wireless button on the printer to make it discoverable.
- Press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.
- Wait for the wireless light on the printer to stop blinking, indicating it has connected successfully.
Check for Network Conflicts:
- Make sure your old network isn’t saved in the printer. If it is, it may be trying to connect to that instead. The factory reset should clear this, but double-check that it’s in Wireless Setup Mode.
Connectivity Checks
Check Wi-Fi Signal:
- Ensure that the printer is within range of the Wi-Fi signal. Ideally, it should be no more than 10-15 feet from the router during setup.
Router Settings:
- Ensure your router's settings allow new devices to connect. Sometimes, routers can block devices from joining the network based on security settings.

Firewall/Security Settings:
- If you have a firewall or any security protocols in place on your router, temporarily disable them to see if they’re preventing the printer from connecting.
Power Cycle All Devices:
- Turn off the printer, router, and Mac. Wait a minute, then turn them back on to refresh all connections.
After Setup
Print a Network Configuration Page:
- After attempting the connection, print a Network Configuration Page from the printer. This will help you verify whether the printer is connected to the correct network. You can find this option in the printer's menu under Setup > Reports > Network Configuration.
Add the Printer on Your Mac:
- Once connected, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and click the + button to add your printer. Select the HP LaserJet M234sdw from the list and click Add.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,
Thanks again for these detailed instructions. Unfortunately, nothing is working as described in your reply. Here's where we stand:
- Held the info button and pressed the green button to generate a Network Summary page which confirmed the printer is still configured on my old network (status: not connected).
- I've unsuccessfully tried in every way to hard/cold reset the printer. None of the described steps have gotten me to factory reset. This is not a touchscreen printer, and the instructions "hold both buttons for X amount of seconds" hasn't worked in any combination I've tried. This is the main issue prohibiting me from setting this printer up on my new home network.
How does one remove/reset old network settings on M234sdw (remember, no touchscreen)?
