HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Spectre 360 laptop with Windows 10 and an HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 which previously worked perfectly fine together over my home wireless network.  I hadn't printed anything in a while, then tried to print today from the computer just like always, and I keep getting "there is an error printing."  I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor several times and it says everything on the printer is working fine, then when I try to print a Test Page, nothing happens, printer sits silent and error message flashes on the computer that "HP Printer could not print Test Page."  The print jobs show up in the Print Queue and just sit there.  I cancel the jobs before trying the next fix, but nothing will get the printer to print from the computer.  I have reinstalled the latest HP software and drivers on the computer, restarted both the computer and unplugged/restarted the printer multiple times, I have checked and updated the printer's IP address.  The printer readily prints from its own screen - I print out a Printer Status Report and a Network Configuration Report and both reports say everything is working fine, no issues.  I know the computer and printer are communicating because the HP Smart App pulls up the correct printer info - even ink levels -- and the HP Doctor app finds the printer, communicates with it, and says everything works fine.  Then nothing will print. I haven't made an operating system, software, or network changes in months (except reinstalling the latest HP software today after multiple other attempted fixes).  I cannot figure out why the computer suddenly can't get the printer to print!

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
