Triangles seem to be the only content of the two screenshots I thought I had uploaded! I'll try again.

Two more documents if they can help diagnose the problem:

(1) One Windows Printer Test Page, dated 4/14/2021, in which the computer sends RAW PCL data through winprint.

(2) Another Windows Printer Test Page, dated 4/18/2021: IMF data are sent through HP1100PrintProc.

Format and processor are clearly not the problem. In both cases, the printer goes on failing to print further than one document, posting 'User intervention' and/or 'Attention' required.

 Does that help?

I finally found a solution to my laptop printing problem.

HP Smart insists on installing the printer with a driver called 'HP LaserJet Professional P1606dn'.

This being indeed the name of my printer, it does seem to be a good driver to use.  And the test page proposed by the Windows 'Add printer' option does print.  However, when trying to print other documents after that test page, notifications I receive include: 'Printer offline', 'Attention required', 'Not installed', 'Error printing on NPI4199F7 (HP LaserJet professional P1606dn)', 'unable to communicate with the printer', 'User intervention required' etc.  Sometimes it prints the document, most times it does not.

I finally noticed that my desktop, which has no problem printing, uses a more generic driver: 'HP LaserJet Mono PCLmS Class Driver'.  After installing and using this driver, my printer now works from the laptop.  It works whether I use the 'winprint' or the 'HP1100PrintProc' as print processor, and both send data to the printer in RAW format.

HP Smart also sometimes insists on using a WSD port, instead of a Standard TCP/IP port.  In my experience, the WSD port never works.  (One can guess that I have installed, deleted, reinstalled the printer many times!)

I spent many, many hours on this.  I wish I would not have had to...
