It is hard-wired (ethernet cable) to a wifi router. The laptop communicates via wifi.
The laptop (Dell Inspiron 5570) runs Windows 10 (64 b) - 20H2, with all the most recent updates installed.
Note: the printer prints correctly from my desktop (hard-wired to router) and from another laptop (wifi)
Printer Installation details:
‘Searching for devices to add’ brings up two devices:
HP LaserJet Professional P1610dn)
NPI4199F7 (HP LaserJet Professional P1610dn)
Note 1: I don’t understand why the search detects two devices when there is only one. It suggests that the router-wifi coupling does confuse the windows detection process.
Note 2: When installing the same printer on the desktop, the same two devices are also detected, but I can only get ‘NPI4199F7 (HP LaserJet Professional P1610dn)’ to work.
Location assigned: http://192.168.2.76:3911 (same as on desktop)
Port: Standard TCP/IP / NPI4199F7 (HP LaserJet Professional P1610dn) (same as on my desktop)
Driver: HP LaserJet Mono PCLmS Class Driver (same as on desktop)
But no print (‘Error printing on ….) and Windows troubleshooting indicates: ‘Printer …… cannot be contacted over the network’
HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.6 (HPPSDr) does detect the printer (or does it just find it in the installation file?) with the address 192.168.2.76
But when going further:…’Failed to communicate with your selected product’
Following the steps suggested – reboot router, reboot printer – does not help: same result.
Eventually, Retry, connect did something, and the printer did print a test page.
HPPSDr has reset the port to a WSD port (WSD-efc35bd8-f345-4676-b454-b4e55d7b746)
However, when trying to print a word document, there is no print, only a notification that ‘printer needs attention’. The print queue does show the document the queue.
Went through this HPPSDr routine three times with the same failing result.
Tried to go back from the WSD port to a TCP/IP port: no print and ‘Error printing notification’
Windows device Troubleshooting does not help either.
What else can I do?

I finally found a solution to my laptop printing problem.
HP Smart insists on installing the printer with a driver called 'HP LaserJet Professional P1606dn'.
This being indeed the name of my printer, it does seem to be a good driver to use. And the test page proposed by the Windows 'Add printer' option does print. However, when trying to print other documents after that test page, notifications I receive include: 'Printer offline', 'Attention required', 'Not installed', 'Error printing on NPI4199F7 (HP LaserJet professional P1606dn)', 'unable to communicate with the printer', 'User intervention required' etc. Sometimes it prints the document, most times it does not.
I finally noticed that my desktop, which has no problem printing, uses a more generic driver: 'HP LaserJet Mono PCLmS Class Driver'. After installing and using this driver, my printer now works from the laptop. It works whether I use the 'winprint' or the 'HP1100PrintProc' as print processor, and both send data to the printer in RAW format.
HP Smart also sometimes insists on using a WSD port, instead of a Standard TCP/IP port. In my experience, the WSD port never works. (One can guess that I have installed, deleted, reinstalled the printer many times!)
I spent many, many hours on this. I wish I would not have had to...

Hi,
Please remove any created print queue and install the printer drivers first, from your description it seems you like the drivers and uses a generic driver.
You may download the latest drivers below:
If the driver extracts but won't launch, follow below steps to manually run HpSetup.exe:
Once completing the installation try printing again.

Thank you very much.
I did download the latest drivers.
The downloaded .exe file did extract but did not launch.
The HPSetup.exe program did run and seemed to do things.
But at the end it could not detect the printer and it tentatively blamed that on the firewall.
I disabled all firewalls (private, domain, public) and ran the whole thing again.
But I still read: 'Printer not found / Setup unable to detect any printer on the network'
The printer connection is not at fault, as I can still print from other computers.
I could specify an address for the printer but anything I can think of entering is not recognised as a valid address.
Any further suggestion?
Thank you very much in advance.

Actually, I added the device through windows, chose the NPI4199F7 printer, used the windows troubleshooter and was able to print the test page. But I cannot print anything else because the printer 'needs attention'. Which 'attention' is, as usual, not defined nor described.

Additionally, I cleared the queue, ran the troubleshooter again, and printed one document.
When sending another document for printing, the printer needs 'user intervention' as well as requiring attention.
Help!
Thank you.

Hi,
Try following below specific version of the HP Print and Scan Doctor Utility by selecting your printer:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe
Be sure to restart your PC and allow the utility to complete the process, then check for any difference.
Try printing and check for any change, if the same remains try printing using the newly added print queue copy (Copy1) and check for any difference.

Thank you. The problem persists.
The new, specific HPPSdr.exe (v. 5.0.8) does no better than v. 5.6.
v. 5.0.8 does recognize the printer as installed.
'Finding and fixing problems' claims that the printer is offline (which it is not).
Test pages sometimes print but mostly don't.
Notifications appear for 'User intervention' and 'Attention' required. But, sometimes, there is neither printing nor any notification.
v. 5.6 does not state that printer is offline, but blames lack of sharing and Defender's firewall.
Allowing sharing (which to my knowledge was already allowed), a print request gives me the 'User Intervention required' notification.
So, in summary, random prints, never two in a row without some run of HPPSdr or trouble shooting in between.
What else can I do?
Thank you.

Please open any application such as Word, click on file > Print and then expend the printers list so any available printer is visible.
Could you please take a screenshot of this list and attach it in your reply to get some better understanding?
