Microsoft Windows 11

Since the upgrade, I have not been able to print, although I can scan. I can print the same documents using an iPad.  My instinct is that there is a problem with Windows 11, but HP might know about a solution.

@dismiss, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Unable to Print to HP ENVY 7858!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Based on your description, it appears that the issue might stem from changes made by Microsoft in the Windows 11 Pro Edition 24H2 update, specifically regarding the new Windows Protected Print (WPP) mode.

Issue

You are experiencing issue which may be due to the new IPP-based Windows Protected Print (WPP) mode in Windows 11 Pro Edition 24H2. This setting can cause issues like:

  • The deletion of non-IPP print queues.
  • Custom configurations not being retained, leading to ‘Not Connected’ or ‘Not Configured’ statuses when attempting to print.

Solution

Microsoft has scheduled a fix for this issue to be released in a non-security update in February 2025. In the meantime, here’s what you can do:

Steps to Resolve the Issue

Backup Print Queue Information: Before enabling WPP, it is crucial to back up the current print queues (queue names, assigned ports, etc.) and take inventory of any customizations.

Remove Defunct Print Queues:

  • From Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click on the Remove button.
  • Reinstall the printer by selecting from the list Microsoft provides and reconfigure any deleted print queues.

Reinstall Printer:

  • Open Printers & Scanners.
  • Select Install from the list provided by Microsoft.
  • Manually reconfigure any deleted queues.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Presently my printer is working.  I don't know how.

I followed your advice by removing the printer and re-adding it again.  I needed to add drivers and I went through those dialoges in windows to update the drivers.    Then Windows encountered a problem installing the drivers for you (my) device  which is HP ENVY PROTO 7800 Series PCL-3,

An error occurred during the installation of the device:  The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner.  Contact your HW vendor.  That is you, HP!

I removed the printer again and re-added it.  This time it gave a ready status and I was able to print a test page.   So much fun!

I'm not sure my problem is totally resolved.  Time will tell.

@dismiss, Thanks for the update! 😊 Just checking in—how’s the printer working now? Still printing fine, or are you seeing any issues pop up again?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
