Hi @DeadlyDave,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e All-in-One Printer (40Q50A) is not printing from Windows 11 and displays configuration error 0x80040003, while the HP diagnostic check reports that everything is working correctly.

Let's try the following steps.
1. Check Windows Update
In Windows, search for and open Check for updates and install any available Windows updates. Restart the computer afterwards and try printing again.

HP recommends checking Windows updates first when troubleshooting Windows 11 printing problems.

2. Remove the printer from the HP app
Since Diagnose & Fix has already completed without detecting an issue, you do not need to keep repeating the diagnostic.

  • Open the HP app and select your printer.
  • Scroll to the bottom and select Remove from app.

If you are still using HP Smart, right-click the printer and select Hide Printer > Hide Printer. HP documents removing and re-adding the printer when resolving Windows printer configuration/driver issues.

3. Remove the printer from Windows

  1. Search Windows for Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e.
  3. Select Remove and confirm the removal.

4. Reinstall the HP printer software
If the issue continues, HP's Windows troubleshooting guidance recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software and driver:

  1. Search Windows for Add or remove programs.
  2. Locate the HP printer software and uninstall it.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected.
  5. Reinstall the current software/driver for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e. HP currently provides Windows 11 as an OS selection on the driver page for this exact printer. HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

5. Check whether the error is computer-specific
After reinstalling, please try printing again. Also, let us know whether you can make a copy directly from the printer control panel without using the Windows 11 computer.

If copying works but Windows continues to show 0x80040003, please tell us:

  • Where exactly does 0x80040003 appear, for example, in the Windows Print dialog, HP app, or another application?
  • Does it happen when printing from all applications or only one?
  • Is the printer connected through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB?
  • Did this start after a Windows update or printer firmware update?

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e All-in-One Printer support page currently also displays an HP notice for customers who are unable to print after a firmware update, so please mention if the problem began immediately following a printer update.
