An error has occurred An error occurred. The connection timed out due to inactivity or the server is unable to respond. Network connection issue Session-id: S:47be20db9d1a9dc723a64c9cd7ae7af83342c156
This has been happening for nearly a year, since I bought the printer. I have never been able to use the HP Smart App. I have gone through every possible solution online that I can find. I have been on with tech support since it is still under warranty but have gotten no resolution. The tech support team pushed up to a higher level of support but because I did not purchase a support, they wanted to charge a $100 because they needed to troubleshoot the network issue because it was not a printer issue. However, I have used HP printers for decades and never had a problem until I got this printer. It doesn work on any of the computers I have . I have spent dozens of hours trying to solve the issue but have not been able too. I hate the answers: reboot your machine, make sure HP Smart is up to date, are you sure you have an internet connection...this is rediculous!!!

There is something really wrong here if you've been using it for a year.
Do you have Wi-Fi boosters and repeaters?
Does the problem go away if you use a hard wired Ethernet cable to the modem?
The HP Officejet Pro 7740 printer supports 2.4GHz wireless operations only, it does not support dual-band wireless or a 5GHz band. Please contact your ISP and make sure that 2.4GHz wireless networking is enabled with a unique SSID and not an identical one to the 5GHz band, then connect the printer to the 2.4GHz wireless. |
I have never used HP smart after the initial installation. That is all it was good for. If you don't have a scan application "HP Scan", then yes, you must use HP Smart to do a scan;. However 3rd party applications like Adobe and others can scan as long as the scan driver is loaded.

You may need to reset your printer.
Disconnecting the USB or ethernet cable may still leave the printer in the wired mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some printers have a semi-reset, a full reset and a factory reset. Please refer to the user manual to find the difference. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Note that a reset video may show a slightly different model than yours.

Wi-Fi connection
Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The modem needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the modem.
Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 100 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the modem |
Software
HP updates software periodically. Downloads shown below may be old. You should always visit the Software and Download page to look for new releases. You may need to select an operating system (OS) first. If windows 11 is missing then use 10. You can go as far back as Windows 7, 64bit to get missing drivers. After selecting the OS click the blue Open all button to view all downloads.
You can find all of the software here: 7740. You should select the OS and then look for the phrase "Open All" and click that. Full function software for scanning can be downloaded here: 7720-7740 |
Documents
All documents are available at the below HP site. The user and reference manuals show how to get status reports and analyze error indicators on printer that have no control panel.
All HP manuals are here: 7740 |
Support Videos - Parts - Disassembly
HP has a YouTube site and there are a number of video in English and other languages. Typically unboxing, clearing paper jams, and cartridge problems. You may also find instructional disassembly videos from other users.
Parts, if any available, can be found here: 7740. Use your serial number for more extensive information. |
Let me know if you have a flex system (WiFi boosters or repeaters) as the setup is much more complicated.
