In the last few days I have ran into an issue with the scanner on my LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. HP smart app sees the printer/scanner (connected via WLAN to home router). When scanning (whether via Doc feeder or Scanner glass) the LaserJet screen shows the "Scanning to computer" screen, which just hangs there. The HP smart app shows a "Scanner Problem" pop up and prompts for a restart. I have tried restarting both LaserJet and PC with no result. I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which, when testing the scanning function, stops at "Windows (WIA) Scan", which takes a long time, then suggests a reboot of both Laserjet (power cord out) and PC. When I do this, the HP Print and Scan Doctor automatically restarts as well from the same step, but cannot find the LaserJet to continue. Therefore, I need to start the process again (it then finds the LaserJet), but then I come to this loophole without any solution.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @Kruppe,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing a scan-related issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue on your own.
To assist better:
- Does the copy work fine?
- What application are you using to scan?
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
- Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
As you have already done most of the troubleshooting steps. Try using the HP Scan and Capture app to scan from your Windows PC.
- Download HP Scan and Capture (Reference document: Using the HP Scan and Capture App )
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
