@jrtc1991, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
You can often use a mobile hotspot as a makeshift “router” to connect your HP DeskJet 2842e and print documents — but it’s a bit trickier than a regular Wi-Fi network. Let me walk you through how to try it, some caveats, and resources.
Here’s how you can attempt to connect your HP DeskJet 2842e to your phone’s mobile hotspot (or another device’s hotspot):
Turn on your mobile hotspot
On your phone, go to Settings → Hotspot & Tethering (or Personal Hotspot).
Ensure it’s broadcasting, and note the SSID (network name) and password.
If your phone allows it, force the hotspot to broadcast only on 2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz), because many HP printers don’t support 5 GHz hotspots well.
Make sure no extra filtering (MAC filters, etc.) is blocking your new devices.
Prepare the printer for wireless setup
Power on the printer.
On many HP DeskJet models, to enable a fresh wireless setup, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel (X) buttons together for ~ 5 seconds. This resets its wireless settings so it can scan for networks.
The wireless light should begin blinking, indicating the printer is ready to search for Wi-Fi networks.
Connect the printer to the hotspot using Embedded Web Server (EWS)
On a computer or phone that is connected to the hotspot, open a web browser and go to the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS): you’ll need the printer’s IP address.
In the EWS under Network / Wireless settings, run the Wireless Setup Wizard.
From there, select your hotspot’s SSID (network name), enter the password, and apply.
Use Wi-Fi Direct if hotspot fails
If connecting via hotspot doesn’t work, an alternative is Wi-Fi Direct. This lets your computer or phone connect directly to the printer without going through a router.
Once Wi-Fi Direct is enabled on the printer, your device can join its direct network, and you can then print.
