Please help! I have been at this for days!
I have a HP envy 4504 - worked like a dream o have recently changed my wifi services to a new provider and the printer will not connect to the new network.
i am going round and round in circles.
i have restored it back to factory settings. It’s picking up my new wifi - asking me to enter wpa/welp which I presume is my wifi password and then it advises me it can not connect. Someone please help! I would have thrown it in bin and brought a new one by now but it has brand new ink cartages worth £60
in it!

Hi @Janna1980, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating this is! Since your HP Envy 4504 is detecting your Wi-Fi but failing to connect, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Check Wi-Fi Compatibility
The HP Envy 4504 supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. If your new router is set to 5 GHz only, the printer won’t connect.
✅ Solution:
Log into your router settings and ensure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is enabled. Some routers merge 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz into one network name (SSID), so try separating them into different SSIDs.
Use the HP Wireless Setup Wizard
Since your printer detects the network but won’t connect:
- On the printer screen, go to Setup (wrench icon) > Wireless > Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Select your network and enter the Wi-Fi password carefully (case-sensitive!).
- If it still fails, try moving the printer closer to the router and reconnect.
Restart Everything
- Turn off the printer, router, and computer/phone.
- Wait 2 minutes, then turn them back on.
- Try connecting the printer again.
Manually Assign an IP Address
If the connection still fails, your router might not be assigning an IP to the printer.
- On the printer, print a Network Configuration Page:
- Press Wi-Fi + Information button together (or navigate to Settings > Reports > Print Network Config).
- Note the Auto-Assigned IP Address (likely 169.xxx.xxx.xxx).
- Open a browser on your computer and go to your router’s admin page (usually 192.168.1.1).
- Find Connected Devices/DHCP Settings and manually add the printer with an IP like 192.168.1.100.
- Try connecting again.
Try WPS Push Button Mode
If your router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):
- Press the WPS button on your router.
- Within 2 minutes, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer until the Wi-Fi light starts blinking.
- The printer should connect automatically.
Update Printer Firmware
If the printer's firmware is outdated, it might be incompatible with your new router's security protocols.
- Use HP Smart App (Windows, Mac, or mobile) to check for firmware updates.
- Or download the latest firmware from HP support website and update via USB.
7. Try Connecting via USB, Then Reconfigure Wi-Fi
- Connect the printer to your computer via USB.
- Open HP Smart.
- Go to Printer Settings > Wireless Setup and try configuring Wi-Fi from there.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
