Hi @Cygnus65,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your HP ENVY Photo 7900 works normally when printing from your phone, but your Dell laptop running Windows 11 cannot connect to the printer. Since the printer can communicate with your phone over the same Wi-Fi network, this points more toward the Windows printer connection or software setup than a printer hardware issue.

Reconnect the printer in Windows.

  1. On the printer, print a Wireless Network Test Report and confirm that the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  2. On the Dell laptop, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. If the ENVY Photo 7900 is already listed, select it and choose Remove. This clears the existing Windows printer connection.
  4. Restart the laptop.
  5. Open the current HP app and select Add Printer.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the ENVY Photo 7900 again.

If the printer is found but you still receive the 8549A8 error, please provide the exact wording of the error or a screenshot of the message. That will help determine whether the problem is with printer discovery, the Windows print system, or the HP app.

Since the printer is already printing successfully from your phone, I would not change the router settings yet. Let's first establish a fresh connection between Windows 11 and the printer.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply!

I did the wireless Network test and everything is good, printer connected.

And i fallowed your instructions for Windows even reinstall the HP app and driver but same result….

and the error message doesn’t say much just printer error and when I look in the printer and scanner section of Windows the printer status is in error.

Thanks.

Hi @Cygnus65,

Thank you for the update. Since the ENVY Photo 7900 is connected to Wi-Fi, the Wireless Network Test passes, and printing works from your phone, while Windows 11 shows the printer as “Error” even after reinstalling the HP app and driver, we can rule out a basic Wi-Fi connection problem.

Let's check the Windows print system next.

Check the Windows Print Spooler

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler.
  3. Confirm that its status is Running and Startup type is Automatic.
  4. Right-click Print Spooler > Restart.
  5. Restart the laptop and check the printer again under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Check the printer queue

  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > ENVY Photo 7900.
  • Select Open print queue.
  • Make sure there are no stuck or pending documents.
  • If there are, cancel them and try a new test print.

If Windows still shows the printer as Error, please open Printer properties and check the Ports tab. Let me know which port is selected (for example, a Standard TCP/IP port, WSD port, or HP IPP port).

That information will help determine whether Windows is failing to communicate with the printer even though the printer itself is successfully connected to the network.

Hi,

I did all the verifications and there’s still an error message when I tried to print a test print….

The selected port is WSD-8842e01.

Maybe l should use a cable instead 😄

Thanks  again for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. Since the printer passes the wireless test, prints successfully from your phone, and you have already reinstalled the HP app/driver and checked the Windows print system, the WSD port is the next thing I would test.

Yes, using a USB cable is actually a good diagnostic step.

Test the printer using USB

  1. Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi only if necessary; you can leave the wireless connection enabled.
  2. Connect the ENVY Photo 7900 directly to the Dell laptop with a USB printer cable.
  3. Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
  4. Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  5. Check whether a USB-connected ENVY Photo 7900 appears.
  6. Print a Windows test page.

If the printer works normally over USB, that would strongly point toward an issue with the Windows network/WSD connection, rather than the printer itself.

If the test page still fails over USB, please let me know. Also, if possible, tell me whether Windows creates a new printer entry when you connect the USB cable.

Hi

i was able to print a test page when the cable was plugged in and there is a new printer entry in Windows…

And it’s connected in HP app.

Thanks

Hi @Cygnus65,

Thank you for the update. That's a useful result.

Since the ENVY Photo 7900 prints successfully from the Dell laptop when connected by USB, while the same printer shows an error when using the WSD-8842e01 network port, this points toward a problem with the Windows network printer connection/WSD configuration rather than the printer's basic printing function.

You can continue using the USB connection as a workaround. If you would prefer to print wirelessly, the next step would be to remove the current WSD-based printer entry and add the printer again using its network connection through the HP app.

Before we proceed, please let me know whether you would like to continue troubleshooting the wireless connection or if you are comfortable using the USB connection.

Hi kuroi,

To be honest, I’m thinking about using the cable…

Of course, ideally, I would prefer to use it wirelessly, but not sure it’s worth it.

Just need to know your opinion,  What would you do?

Many thanks.

Hi @Cygnus65,

 Thanks for your response.
Based on the testing you completed, my opinion is that the printer itself is working correctly. Since:

  • The printer prints successfully from your phone.
  • The printer prints successfully from your Dell laptop when connected via USB.
  • A new printer entry was created in Windows when the USB cable was connected.
  • The issue only occurs when using the WSD wireless printer connection.

This suggests that the problem is with the Windows wireless printer configuration rather than the printer hardware.

I would prefer using the USB connection and continue printing without further troubleshooting.

However, if you would like to restore wireless printing, I recommend trying the following simple steps:

  1. Remove the current wireless (WSD) printer from Settings > Printers & scanners.
  2. Restart both the computer and the printer.
  3. Open the HP app.
  4. Select Add Printer and let HP App rediscover the printer on the network.
  5. Complete the setup and then print a test page.

If wireless printing works after re-adding the printer, you can disconnect the USB cable and continue using Wi‑Fi as normal.

If it were my printer, I would try the wireless setup once more using the steps above.

I hope this helps.
