I've had the printer for over a year, it's worked perfectly, narry an error. The only timeframe I think I can point to is that I ran out of toner, and ever since I refilled it, I've had constant problems. Printer will not just print. One or more of these problems happen every single time I print. I'm constantly turning printer on, off, resetting:
-Printer will turn off, send an error message to device, then never print, then printer status shows Error 79
-Printer will turn off, send an error message to device, then back on, then eventually print all on its own
-Printer will turn off, then back on, and forget it was supposed to print something and sit idle, no printer queue
-Printer will never print with Error code 05
-Printer gets jammed Error 67, sometimes barely taken into printer, sometimes almost finished
PLEASE HELP!!! It's driving me crazy! Cannot just rely on printer to print! Like I said, it was working fantastic and never had any issues. What's wrong with it now!??

Hi @Getter,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw is having multiple issues after refilling the toner. Let’s work through the possible causes and solutions for these errors:
1. Error 79 (and intermittent power cycling)
- Cause: This is often caused by a firmware issue, corrupt print jobs, or communication problems between the printer and the computer.
- Solution:
- Update firmware: Go to HP's official website and ensure your printer has the latest firmware. Sometimes a new firmware version can resolve error 79 issues.
- Clear Print Queue: Check if there's a stuck print job in the queue and clear it. You can do this by navigating to the "Printers & Scanners" settings in Windows 11 and clearing the print queue.
- Reset Printer: Perform a hard reset. Turn off the printer, unplug it, wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
2. Error Code 05
- Cause: This could be due to an issue with the toner cartridge, a sensor problem, or a malfunction in the toner refill.
- Solution:
- Check the toner: Ensure the toner cartridge was installed properly and isn't damaged. Sometimes, when refilling a toner, there can be clogs or issues with the toner chip.
- Reinstall the toner: Remove the toner cartridge, gently shake it to redistribute the toner, and reinstall it to ensure proper placement.
3. Error Code 67 (Paper Jam Issues)
- Cause: This error can be triggered by a physical jam, debris inside the printer, or an issue with the toner refill.
- Solution:
- Clear any physical jams: Open the printer and carefully check for any paper scraps, toner residue, or misaligned paper.
- Check paper path and rollers: Inspect the rollers for wear or debris. Clean them carefully with a lint-free cloth and a little water if needed.
- Ensure proper toner refill: Refilling toner improperly can cause overfilled or underfilled cartridges, which might result in paper jams.
4. Printer not Printing or Sitting Idle
- Cause: The printer might be losing communication with the computer or could be receiving corrupt print jobs.
- Solution:
- Reboot both the printer and computer: Restart both devices to reset the connection.
- Check connection type: If you're using a wireless connection, try switching to a wired connection temporarily to see if this resolves the issue.
- Check for software conflicts: Make sure the printer driver and HP software are up to date. Reinstalling the printer software on your PC could help.
5. General Troubleshooting
- Check for Firmware Updates: Visit HP’s support website and download any available firmware updates for your printer. Sometimes, these updates address error codes and communication issues.
- Avoid Over-filling the Toner: If you overfilled the toner cartridge during the refill, it could cause operational issues. If possible, verify that the toner refill was done correctly and not overfilled.

Thank you!
I decided to systematically walk through your steps - even though I knew I had tried most of the advice already in some form or another multiple times over the last several months! I had downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor and it said it had updated my firmware. But that was my first step.
In looking for a solution, I was playing around with setting a permanent IP address. In order to do that I used the "i" button on my printer to printout my IP address. When I typed that into my web browser, I got a local control panel to pop up for my printer.
If I click on "System" and then "Administration" and scroll down to "Printer Updates" it gave an option "To check for new updates." It found and installed new updates, and it's been working absolutely perfect ever since.
Hope this helps for someone else! Thanks again!
