Hi @Barb121,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems you're facing multiple issues while trying to install your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 on your new HP laptop running Windows 10. Let’s go through a few steps to resolve the installation problem and get your printer connected wirelessly.

1. Uninstall Any Existing Printer Drivers

Since you mentioned that you deleted the old HP 8600 files, it’s important to ensure that no remnants of previous installations are still present, as they could be causing conflicts.

Steps to uninstall any existing drivers:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Find your old HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer in the list and remove it by selecting it and clicking Remove Device.
  • Also, go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program and make sure any previous HP software (like HP Support Assistant or the old printer drivers) is removed.

2. Download the Latest HP Printer Drivers

Since your printer is not connecting via wireless, let's make sure you have the correct, up-to-date drivers for Windows 10.

  • Go to HP's official website to download the drivers:
    1. Go to HP's driver page for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.
    2. Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600) and select your Windows 10 version (32-bit or 64-bit).
    3. Download and install the latest drivers and software for your printer.
  • Make sure you download the full software suite to ensure all features are available.

3. Ensure Printer is Connected to the Same Network

If your printer was working wirelessly with another device or router, make sure it’s connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.

Steps to connect the printer to Wi-Fi:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless or Network Settings (this depends on the printer's menu).
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard and follow the prompts to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Ensure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop.
  • After the printer connects, it should show your network name (SSID).

4. Use the HP Smart App to Set Up Printer

If you’re still having trouble with the installation, try using the HP Smart app instead of relying on the traditional method.

  • Install HP Smart from the Microsoft Store on your laptop.
  • Open the app and follow the setup process. It will guide you through the process of connecting the printer to your Wi-Fi network.
  • The HP Smart app is often more reliable than using the traditional method, especially with newer versions of Windows 10.

5. Troubleshooting the Spectrum Wi-Fi Network

Since you mentioned the printer is showing Spectrum (your Wi-Fi network name), double-check the following:

  • Router Settings: Ensure your router is set to broadcast 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Some older printers, like the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, only connect to 2.4 GHz networks, not 5 GHz.
  • Wi-Fi Band Selection: Some routers allow you to separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. If your router has this feature, try connecting your printer directly to the 2.4 GHz network.
  • Signal Strength: Ensure the printer is within range of the Wi-Fi router for a stable connection.

I hope this helps.
