Hi @LizzieD2,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP DeskJet 4200e is having trouble with both the WiFi setup and recognizing it as a printer. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve these issues:

1. Check Power and Connections

  • Power Cycle: Unplug the printer from the power source and wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in. Make sure the power cord is securely connected.
  • Check Lights: Ensure that the power light and any other indicator lights are not showing unusual patterns (flashing amber, for instance).

2. Reset the Printer

  • Hard Reset: If the printer’s display is unresponsive, you may need to perform a hard reset. To do this, turn off the printer and unplug it. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

3. Reconnect to WiFi

  • Check Network: Ensure your WiFi network is working and other devices can connect to it.
  • WiFi Setup:
    • On the printer, navigate to the WiFi setup menu (refer to your printer’s manual for exact instructions).
    • Choose your WiFi network and enter the correct password.
    • If the setup fails, try using the HP Smart app or software on your computer to set up the WiFi connection. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Remove and Reinstall: Go to your computer’s Control Panel or Settings, find the list of printers, and remove the DeskJet 4200e if it's listed. Then, download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support website.

5. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Update Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve connectivity issues. Check for any available updates on the HP Support website or through the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
