HP Deskjet 2544 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've been using my HP Deskjet 2544 for years on my home wifi with two laptops (Win10 & Mac), but now it's suddenly "offline", it "has an error status". It works if I use the USB connection to the nearby laptop (Win10), and it works if I switch it to Wifi Direct Printing but then the laptop isn't connected to the internet so that's no use. When I go through the "connect a new printer" process in HP Print and Scan Doctor it can't find it, even when I tell it the IP address or follow other options. I've tried switching it on and off etc. and reconnecting it to the router with WPS. Obviously I've turned off & on its wifi several times. The router shows it connected and its IP address but HP-PSD can't see it. It just seems that it won't respond over normal wifi.

Hi @Doug_84,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating when your printer suddenly goes offline, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP Deskjet 2544. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get your printer back online.

  1. Check Printer Status:

    • Make sure your printer is turned on and not displaying any error messages or warnings on its control panel.
  2. Printer Connectivity:

    • Verify that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptops. Check the network name (SSID) and password.
    • Restart the router to ensure it's working correctly.
  3. Reboot Devices:

    • Restart your laptops to ensure there are no temporary issues with the network or printing subsystem.
  4. HP Print and Scan Doctor:

    • Download and run the latest version of HP Print and Scan Doctor, and follow its instructions to troubleshoot the printer. It can help identify and fix common printing issues.
  5. Update Printer Drivers:

    • Ensure that you have the latest drivers and software for your HP Deskjet 2544 installed on your laptops. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.
  6. Remove and Re-Add Printer (Windows 10):

    • Open the "Devices and Printers" or "Printers & Scanners" settings on your Windows 10 laptop.
    • Remove the HP Deskjet 2544 if it's listed.
    • Add a new printer and select the networked printer. Follow the prompts to reinstall it.
  7. Reset the Printer Network Settings:

    • On your printer, navigate to the wireless settings and reset the network settings to their default.
    • Reconfigure the printer to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
  8. Firewall or Antivirus Software:

    • Disable any firewall or antivirus software temporarily to check if they are blocking the printer's connection.
  9. Manual IP Configuration:

    • Assign a static IP address to your printer within your router settings. This will ensure that the printer always has the same IP address.
  10. Check for Firmware Updates:

    • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Installing the latest firmware can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.
  11. MAC Address Filtering:

    • Make sure that MAC address filtering on your router is not preventing the printer from connecting to the Wi-Fi network. You can add the printer's MAC address to the allowed devices list.
  12. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

    • If your router supports it, try reconnecting the printer using WPS. Press the WPS button on your router and then on the printer.
  13. Factory Reset (if necessary):

    • As a last resort, you can perform a factory reset on your printer. This will erase all network settings, so be prepared to reconfigure it from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
