Hi. I have owned an HP Envy 6055 All in One Printer for over one and one half years. From time to time, I had to re-connect my printer to the WiFi because it would not print. I  was always able to connect the printer to the WiFi. However, yesterday I had to set it up again for WiFi and this time I couldn't connect at all.  My HP Smart App states that it is connecting to the network, but 20 minutes goes by and it still does not connect. I have tried several times.

 

I asked someone about this and he said that my connection is on 5 GHz and that I need to contact my Internet Service Provider and ask them to separate my 2.4 GHz from the 5 GHz bandwidth because my printer needs the 2.4 GHz connection.

 

Could this be correct? I have not changed my router or Internet Service Provider,  and I was able to connect the printer to the WiFi before. If this is correct, is there a way I can make the change myself instead of contacting my ISP?

What you were told is perhaps partly correct.

 

  • The router should broadcast on both bands.
  • If the router supports the option, each band (frequency) should be assigned a separately named SSID for that frequency.
  • The printer should be connected to a separately named SSID network for the band / frequency you want it to use.
  • The printer need not be connected to 2.4GHz - it supports both bands, just not at the same time.
  • The printer can be connected to the 2.4GHz frequency if it works better that way.  5GHz is "faster" -- depending on your network, your distance between the router and the printer, the quality of the router, and various other factors, connecting the printer to 2.4GHz might be a perfectly viable and reasonable option to consider.
  • Assigning a manual (static) IP address to the printer (and on the router for that printer) can help stabilize the printer printer connection.

What to do?

 

If you have control of your router, that is, you can log into the device and you understand how it works, then you can check the features, update the firmware, and make any necessary changes.

 

For example, Broadcast on both frequencies and create separate SSID named networks for each frequency (band).

 

If you have control of your router, but you do not understand how to manage its features or setup, that is the time to contact your ISP provider and ask for help.  Alternatively, if the router has a user guide, read that to learn more.

Dual Band / Dual Frequency Network

 

Considerations when connecting to the dual band network:

For example, the printer does not "hop" from one frequency to another.

If the frequency changes suddenly, the printer will lose connection to the network.

 

Assign the printer to the SSID named network for the frequency you want it to use.

Further protect the printer from DHCP by assigning the printer a manual (static) IP address.
