I just moved and tried to connect my HP ENVY4500 to my new wifi.  The printer finds the wifi, but when i input the password, it says it can't connect.  I tried unplugging the printer and router, then restarting...nothing!  This printer has  been working for years wirelessly.  Here's what I've tried:  The printer says wireless is on.  When i hit the setup wizard, it finds the wifi network.  But then it asks for the WPA/WEP.  I assume that's the network password (if not, then that's my problem!!). When i enter the password, it says can't connect.  (And the password has worked for my pc's, phone and tablet, so it is correct).  Any thoughts???

Yes...I changed counties within the state of Florida.
I have reset the printer to factory settings.

I have done the 'unplug' routine and the restart of the router.

The password has worked with all of my other devices such as phones, iPads, laptops and Sonos.
I also tried the Wireless-protected setup method.
I also entered the Mac id of the printer into the router.

NOTHIING WORKS!!
Any thoughts would really be appreciated.

Hi @Lev14,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you’ve reset the printer and tried multiple connection methods, let’s go through a structured troubleshooting approach to get your HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer connected to WiFi.

1. Check Router Settings

Even though your other devices connect fine, some routers have security settings that may block older devices like your ENVY 4500.

  • WiFi Band: The ENVY 4500 only supports 2.4GHz networks. Ensure your router has 2.4GHz enabled (some newer routers combine 2.4GHz & 5GHz under one SSID, which can cause issues).
  • Security Type: The printer works best with WPA2-Personal (AES) security. If your router uses WPA3 or mixed mode (WPA2/WPA3), change it to WPA2-AES.
  • MAC Filtering: Since you added the printer’s MAC address manually, try turning off MAC address filtering temporarily to see if it connects.

2. Reconnect Printer to WiFi

Let’s do a fresh connection:

  1. Factory Reset (Again, to ensure we start fresh)
    • On the printer, press Setup (wrench icon) > Restore Defaults > Restore Network Settings.
  2. Manual Connection via Printer Panel
    • Go to Setup > Wireless Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard and enter the WiFi credentials again manually.
  3. Check IP Address
    • After attempting connection, go to Setup > Reports > Print Network Configuration Page.
    • Check if the printer has an IP Address assigned. If not, the connection failed.

3. Alternative Connection Methods

  • WiFi Direct (If Needed)
    • If normal WiFi doesn’t work, try printing via WiFi Direct from your PC or phone (Setup > Wireless Settings > WiFi Direct > Enable).
  • USB Setup via HP Smart App
    • Connect the printer via USB to your PC, open HP Smart, and go to Printer Settings > Wireless Setup. Sometimes this can force the connection.

4. Router Restart & Firmware Update

  • Restart the Router (again)
  • Check for Router Firmware Updates
  • Check for Printer Firmware Updates (Setup > Printer Update)

5. Assign a Static IP (If IP is Changing Frequently)

If the printer shows "Connected" but keeps disappearing, assign it a static IP from the router’s DHCP settings.

Final Option: Reset Router WiFi Settings

If nothing else works, some routers retain old connection data and may block the printer. If possible, try:

  1. Changing WiFi Network Name (SSID)
  2. Setting Up a Guest 2.4GHz Network and connecting the printer there.

Let me know what happens at each step, and we’ll go from there!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks!!   I changed the security to WPA2 and that worked!  Does that reduce the security of all my other devices that are on the network?  (The other option is WPA3-Personal)  Am I better off leaving WP3 in place, and just either using the existing printer without wireless, or buy a new more modern printer?
Also, is there any way to make the 2.Ghz use WPA2 and have the 5Ghz use WPA3?  I have an XB8 modem and it says that security (among other things) are handled automatically.  I did find a way to change to WPA2 for the whole system, but it would be good to WPA3 on the 5Ghz which is handling my newer devices like my phone, tablet, etc., and just leave the printer on the 2Ghz with WPA2.
