HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Changed from Bell Canada to Rogers Xfinity XB8 Technicolor Modem and have not been able to connect this printer to Wifi, My Canon works fine and all my other gear works fine.  It's just this HP printer that won't connect.

I have tried the following:

- Reset printer to factory settings.  Printer finds the 2.4ghz band and I've quadruple checked that I'm entering the correct password but won't connect.

- Added Printer MAC Address to modem (even though MAC filtering is off)

- Reviewed the Band steering settings and am set to separate bands for 2.4, 5 and 6 ghz all with same passwords as they were with Bell.  Turned Band Steering off then tried again... .

- Used wireless direct and was able to connect from my iPhone so it works that way but of course that's not what i want.

- Moved printer right next to modem - same result.

If there's anything else you can suggest, let me know.  As a "comical" aside, the Rogers tech I phoned for support was very pleasant but said, "Yeah, I can't connect my HP Printer either..."

Hi @DericM,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried several solid troubleshooting steps. Since the printer works with Wireless Direct but not with your WiFi network, this suggests that the issue might be related to specific network settings or compatibility between the printer and the Rogers Xfinity XB8 modem. Here are a few additional suggestions that might help.

Verify Wireless Channel Settings

  • Some routers automatically select the wireless channel, but certain channels may cause interference with specific devices, including printers. Try setting the 2.4 GHz band to a specific channel like 1, 6, or 11, which are generally less prone to interference.
  • You can access these settings through the router's admin interface, typically by entering the router's IP address in your browser (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).

Check WPA Settings

  • Ensure that your router is using WPA2 or WPA3 for security. Some older HP printers have compatibility issues with WPA3. If your router is set to WPA3, try changing it to WPA2 and test the connection again.

Assign a Static IP Address

  • Try assigning a static IP address to the printer within the router’s DHCP reservation settings. This can prevent IP conflicts and may make the printer more reliable in connecting to the network.

Disable IPv6

  • Some users have reported connectivity issues when IPv6 is enabled on their router, even though the printer itself uses IPv4. If your router supports IPv6, try disabling it to see if that resolves the issue.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Although you mentioned resetting the printer, ensure that the printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes firmware updates can resolve network connectivity issues.

Test Using a Different Network

  • If possible, try connecting the printer to a different network (like a mobile hotspot or a friend's WiFi) to see if the issue persists. This will help identify whether the issue is with the printer or the specific router setup.

Check for Interference

  • Other devices in your home or building (such as microwaves, cordless phones, or baby monitors) can interfere with your WiFi signal, particularly on the 2.4 GHz band. Try moving your printer and router further apart to reduce potential interference.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • You can download and run HP’s Print and Scan Doctor tool from HP’s website. It may detect and fix any network-related issues preventing the printer from connecting to WiFi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
