Envy 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an Envy 4520 connected  to my laptop via WIFI Direct that I can no longer print to.  Every time I try to print I get a printer error. I did a clean uninstall: Deleted the spool files, removed the printer from settings, uninstalled the HP software, deleted the driver packages, deleted HP from programdata. I then readded the printer using wifi direct., but still was not able to print. Windows printer trouble shooter found no problems. HP Print Doctor said everything was fine and asked to print a test page which failed. It then asked to print an internal test page which also failed. I cold started the printer and reran HP Print Doctor with the same results. Yet my partners laptop also connected to this printer using WIFI Direct can print to it just fine. My iphone can also print to it, and I can connect to the administrative interface from my laptop just fine. Any suggestions?

This Printer only supports 2.4Ghz.

Let's create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)

2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and left-click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.

3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.

4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

@DaveF5

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Hi Betty,

Thank you for your response.

I completed the steps you suggested including also restarting the printer. I installed the ENVY 4520 full Featured software from the link you provided. The connection phase of the installation does not recognize WIFI Direct, so I chose connect later and then added the printer using WIFI Direct from the Windows Settings App. This appeared to work. However, attempting to print a test page fails with a printer error  and no further information.

Try using the HP Smart App: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2073929-1413451-16

Hi Betty,

The HP Smart App is of no help.  It does not allow me to connect via WIFI Direct.  The IP Address it shows for the printer is its address on our 2g network. My laptop is on our 5g network, which is why I need to use WIFI Direct.  Letting it continue, it appears to connect to the 2g address, but printing the HP Smart Test says it is sending to the printer. but it goes to the bit bucket in the sky with no error reported.  Any other attempt to print results in an error.

I made another attempt using the app to try and force it to use WIFI Direct by turning off Wireless on the printer and only having WIFI Direct turned on. HP Smart was not able to find the printer.

Both the devices have to be on the same network to print that is the Printer and your Laptop.

Hi Betty,

So, are you saying HP removed support for WIFI Direct?

Dave

HP Recommended

No, they did not. You need to connect the Laptop to the Printer's Wi-Fi then if you wish to use Wi-Fi Direct.

The only way I can print using WIFI Direct is to keep my computer connected to the printer WIFI Direct network. This does not even begin to make any sense and not how WIFI Direct printing worked previously. The only way this printer is at all usable now  is to switch my my laptop from my 5g network to the 2g network every time I want to use it.  This is very frustrating. No suggestion in this thread has been of any help.
