I have an Envy Inspire 7900 won't print documents sent to it from an iPhone 12 using WIFI Direct. When I select a document to print (e.g., an email, a web article), and once the printer is selected, I get an "out of paper (photo tray)" message on the phone. I am not trying to print a photo; I am trying to print on plain paper. I can print from the laptop on same network without issue. I have completed the standard corrective actions - power down the printer, check all the feeding rollers, check for driver updates, delete and reinstall the printer - without success. What am I missing? Thank you.

Hi @jimc623
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your HP Envy Inspire 7900 printer is incorrectly reporting an "out of paper (photo tray)" message when trying to print from your iPhone 12 using Wi-Fi Direct, even though you're trying to print on plain paper.
Here are some steps to help resolve this issue:
1. Check the Paper Tray Configuration:
- Paper Tray Settings: The printer might be set to use the photo tray by default when printing from the phone, even though you're using plain paper. Make sure the correct paper source is selected in the printer's settings.
- Go to the printer’s control panel (the display screen) and check the settings to ensure that it's set to use the main paper tray and not the photo tray. Ensure that plain paper is loaded into the main tray, and that the photo tray is either empty or configured properly.
If your printer supports switching paper trays for different print jobs (e.g., plain paper vs. photo paper), ensure that the app or print settings are telling the printer to use the correct tray.
2. Check Print Settings on Your iPhone:
- Sometimes the print settings from the iPhone may default to printing to a specific tray (like the photo tray). Ensure that the print settings are configured to print to the main tray with plain paper.
- On your iPhone, when you select the printer and go to the print settings, check if there is a paper source option. If so, make sure it's set to the main paper tray and not the photo tray.
3. Check the Printer's Tray Sensor:
- The printer might be incorrectly detecting the photo tray as having paper when it doesn't, or it may be unable to detect plain paper properly.
- Try removing any paper from the photo tray and reloading the main tray with plain paper.
- Gently clean the paper tray sensor (usually located near the tray entrance) using a dry cloth, as dust or debris can cause the printer to falsely detect that the photo tray is in use.
4. Reset the Printer’s Paper Tray Configuration:
- A reset might help if the printer is stuck in a particular paper source setting. You can reset the paper settings in the printer menu:
- From the printer’s control panel, go to the Setup or Settings menu.
- Look for an option to reset or clear paper tray configurations.
- Reconfigure the paper tray to ensure the correct paper is selected in the main tray.
5. Wi-Fi Direct vs. Network Printing:
- While Wi-Fi Direct allows for direct communication between your phone and the printer, it can sometimes cause issues with paper tray settings. If you're able to print successfully from your laptop over the Wi-Fi network but not using Wi-Fi Direct, you might want to try printing over the network instead.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
