I am unable to print. The printer reports that "the printer cannot print until it is connected to the internet"
However, it has been working consistently for 12 months up to now without being connected to the internet. It is connected directly to my desktop computer with a cable. I don't want to have it connected to the internet. I want to print directly via the cable.
How to I get it to work again?

Hi @SteveSeattle9,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your printer is insisting on an internet connection even though it's connected directly to your computer via USB, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Printer Connection
- Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer. Try using a different USB port if possible.
2. Set as Default Printer
- On your computer, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Make sure your printer is set as the default printer. If it's listed as offline, right-click on it and select Set as default printer.
3. Update Printer Drivers
- Ensure you have the latest drivers for your printer. You can download the most recent drivers from the HP Support website.
4. Disable Internet-Dependent Features
- Some printers require internet access for specific features, such as cloud printing or Instant Ink. You can try disabling these features in the printer settings or HP Smart app.
5. Check Printer Status
- Open the Control Panel and navigate to Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your printer, select Printer Properties, and check the status for any error messages or alerts.
6. Reinstall the Printer
- Remove the printer from your computer:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Remove Device.
- Restart your computer, then reconnect the printer. Windows should recognize it and reinstall the necessary drivers.
7. Test Printing
- Try printing a test page after following the above steps. You can do this from the printer properties menu in Devices and Printers.
8. Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings
- Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block printer communication. Temporarily disable them to see if that resolves the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
