Officejet pro 8630
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

An HP Officejet Pro 8630

When the apps icon is selected it checks for registration status and times out and returns a network connection error, if I do it a 2nd time it works just fine.

Connected by ethernet,  prints/scans etc fine.

Seems like a timeout problem when the printer is asleep, if so is there a way to increase the timeout time?

@greg_mcc, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Sleep mode automatically puts the printer into a lower-power state after a set period of time of non-use. The printer returns to its normal power state when you send another print or scan job.

A printer in sleep mode might display some of the following characteristics:

  • The control panel display is dark

  • The power light is slowly pulsing

  • The power light is dim

Sleep mode cannot be disabled, although on some printers you can change the inactive time before the printer enters sleep mode.

Go to Setup > Preferences > Sleep mode > Set it to max time available.

Strange thing is, this problem goes away when the printer is connected via WiFi, by wired ethernet the problem comes back

If you are using the printer wirelessly, you may continue to do so as there is no issue with this connectivity. If you are using an ethernet connection, try the steps mentioned and let me know how it goes.
