The HP 8720 scan function only works from the computer's scan controls and not from the control panel. Any thoughts, please?

Hi @JM003

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are facing issues with the Scanning options which is not functioning on the control panel, howver it works with the laptop. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Verify Scan-to-Computer Settings

  • On your PC, open HP Printer Assistant (installed with the full driver package).

  • Go to Scan → Manage Scan to Computer.

  • Ensure Enable Scan to Computer is checked.

  • Restart both the printer and computer after enabling.

Update/Reinstall HP Software

  • Uninstall the current HP printer software from Control Panel → Programs and Features.

  • Restart your computer.

  • Download and install the Full Feature Software and Driver (not the basic driver) from HP’s support site for the 8720. https://support.hp.com/au-en/products

  • The “Full Web Pack” has been reported to fix scan issues after updates .
  • During installation, select all scan-related components.

Use HP Smart App.

  • Install HP Smart (Windows/Mac/iOS/Android).

  • Add your printer and test scanning from the app.

  • This bypasses control panel issues and ensures connectivity

Control Panel Reset

  • On the printer’s touchscreen:
  • Navigate to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults.
  • Reconnect the printer to your network and re-enable scan-to-computer.

Take care and have an amazing day!
