Hi HP experts,
Trying to setup new HP Deskjet 2732e printer using Wi-Fi Direct on an Android tablet. No wireless network on location.
Android tablet connects to the internet using mobile data.
HP Smart App installed. Followed setup instructions provided by HP. Printer identified and installed.
However, a blue background box appeared in the HP Smart APP asking to continue with configuration (print head alignment).
Selecting the box provides two choices, both complain no wi-fi network available.
Selected the printer box and connected to the EWS server (not straightforward) and managed to do a print head alignment.
Thought everything was going to be OK from here but NO.
Tried to print a document.
HP Smart APP wanted to connect to the internet. The only way this could happen was to disable Wi-Fi. Why do we need to be connected to the internet? Why does HP insist on complicating the installation of a simple printer.
OK now connected to the internet and as you expect, the printer is no longer available.
Re-enabled wi-fi. Blue background box still present (Continue with configuration but no details underneath). Re-installed HP Print Service plug-in. It would not connect to the printer.
Now going around in circles (me) just like the android tablet trying to deal with the printer installation :).
HP Smart APP promises a lot of things which it does not deliver on e.g. seamless installation.
What am I doing wrong?
Looking back, I think it would have been less frustrating doing the following steps to minimise jumping back and forth:
1. Download and install from Google
- HP Smart APP
- HP Print Service plug-in
2. Enable the HP Print Service (if not enabled)
3. Get the HP Wi-Fi Direct SSID/Password
4. Connect to HP Wi-Fi Direct
5. Run HP Smart and install the printer.
Please advise how this printer can be installed successfully?
Kind regards
Baz

Hi Alden4
Thank you for your reply. The instructions you provided below were carried-out several times to no avail.
Internet Connection Workaround:
- If the HP Smart App insists on an internet connection, you may try the following workaround:
- Connect your tablet to the internet using mobile data. ### Done
- Disable Wi-Fi on the tablet, so it doesn't connect to any available networks. ### Done
- Open the HP Smart App and attempt to print. ### Cant' as HP Smart APP cannot connect to the printer
Frustrating and unnecessary interference by HP Smart APP.
I will be returning the printer to the retailer and look for an alternative.
Thank you for your reply.
Kind regards

Hi @BazMarty,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Setting up a printer using Wi-Fi Direct without a local wireless network can be a bit tricky, and it seems like you've encountered some challenges. Here are a few suggestions to help you with the installation.
Internet Connection Requirement:
- Some printer setup processes, even with Wi-Fi Direct, may require an internet connection for firmware updates or to download necessary drivers. This is especially true for wireless printers that may need the latest software. Unfortunately, this is a common requirement for many printer brands.
Internet Connection Workaround:
- If the HP Smart App insists on an internet connection, you may try the following workaround:
- Connect your tablet to the internet using mobile data.
- Disable Wi-Fi on the tablet, so it doesn't connect to any available networks.
- Open the HP Smart App and attempt to print.
Print Directly from App:
- If the HP Smart App continues to ask for an internet connection, consider printing directly from the app without going through the internet connection check. Some apps allow you to print without requiring an internet connection after the initial setup.
Printer Documentation:
- Check the printer's user manual or online documentation for any specific instructions related to Wi-Fi Direct setup without a local network. There might be a step that's not covered in the app instructions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
