Hi @Katygee,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

A mobile phone hotspot can sometimes work for basic printing, but it is generally not considered a stable or consistent connection for HP+ and HP Instant Ink services. Instant Ink requires the printer to maintain a reliable internet connection so it can:

  • Communicate with HP servers,
  • Monitor ink levels,
  • Validate the subscription,
  • And receive service/firmware updates.

With a phone hotspot:

  • The network name or password may change,
  • The hotspot may turn off automatically,
  • Or the printer may lose internet communication intermittently.

Because of this, Instant Ink may not function reliably over a mobile hotspot connection alone.

For printing from your phone without broadband, I would recommend using HP Wi-Fi Direct instead. This allows your phone to connect directly to the printer without needing a home router or broadband connection.

Use HP Wi-Fi Direct

  1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer:
    • Press the Information button to print the information page.
    • The page should include the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
  2. On your phone:
    • Open Wi-Fi settings,
    • Connect directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network.
  3. Open the HP app and print normally.

Regarding your Instant Ink subscription:

  • Once the printer is connected properly to a stable internet connection again, you can usually renew or reactivate the previous Instant Ink plan through your HP account.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @Katygee,

I completely understand how frustrating this has been, especially after spending so much time trying different setup methods. Since you are currently using a mobile hotspot, I do want to mention that hotspot connections are often less stable for printer communication than a standard home Wi-Fi router, particularly during initial setup and HP+ connectivity checks.

Since we already shared the Wi-Fi Direct steps earlier, could you please let me know:

  • What exactly happens when you try connecting through Wi-Fi Direct?
  • Does your phone or computer see the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network name?
  • Are you able to connect but unable to print, or does it fail during the connection itself?

Also, please try printing a Network/Information page from the printer so we can check the wireless status:

  • Press the Information (i) button on the printer once.

This page should show:

  • Wi-Fi Direct status,
  • Wireless connection status,
  • Network signal details,
  • And whether the printer's wireless radio is functioning properly.

Once you share:

  • What happens with Wi-Fi Direct?
  • And what the Information/Network page shows,

I’ll continue helping from there. Hopefully, we can still get the printer connected and printing again before you consider replacing it.
