My HP ENVY 7858 printer will not boot up. It is stuck on the first screen with one dot. I have seen others write about this problem. But do not see if they have have fixed the problem.
Please tell me how to fix the problem.
Please do not tell me tell me to unplug the printer and hold the power button. I have tried that numerous times with and without the ink cartridges and nothing has worked.

Hi @Larry_123-
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP ENVY 7858 printer is stuck in a boot loop or is frozen on the initial screen, showing a single dot and not progressing further. Since you've already tried unplugging the printer and holding the power button, let's explore some additional steps you can try to resolve the issue.
1. Perform a Hard Reset Again (With a Different Sequence)
While it seems you've already tried the basic reset, let's attempt a more thorough hard reset with a different sequence to see if it makes a difference.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the printer from the power source completely, including removing any cables and the power cord.
- Wait 10 Minutes: Let the printer sit without power for at least 10 minutes to ensure any residual power is fully drained.
- Hold the Power Button: After 10 minutes, press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds to drain any remaining power and reset internal circuits.
- Plug it Back In: Plug the printer back into the power outlet and then try powering it on.
If this doesn’t work, proceed to the next steps.
2. Check the Ink Cartridges and Paper Tray
Sometimes, an issue with the ink cartridges or paper feed system can prevent the printer from booting properly.
- Remove the Ink Cartridges: Take out the ink cartridges to see if the printer will boot up without them. This will help determine if a faulty cartridge or ink system is causing the issue.
- Check the Paper Tray: Ensure that the paper tray is not jammed and that there is no paper stuck inside the printer. Remove any paper that could be blocking the feed mechanism.
After checking, try to boot the printer again to see if it progresses beyond the initial screen.
3. Perform a Printer Firmware Recovery (If Possible)
If your printer has become stuck on a particular screen due to a firmware issue, there might be a way to restore it using HP firmware recovery tools.
- Check the HP website to see if there’s a firmware recovery tool for your model.
- Download the recovery tool to a USB drive and follow the instructions provided by HP for the recovery process. This method can sometimes fix printers that are stuck in a boot loop or frozen state.
You can find firmware recovery tools on the official HP website by searching for your model, or in the HP Customer Support page.
4. Perform a Printer Reset via HP Smart App (If Connected)
If your printer is connected to a network or Wi-Fi, try using the HP Smart App to reset or troubleshoot the printer.
- Open the HP Smart App on your smartphone or computer.
- Select your HP ENVY 7858 printer.
- Look for a reset or restore option within the app's settings.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
