I have had a constant issue with my HP Envy 5540 since day 1. The printer never wants to connect until an hour of disconnecting, resetting, and reinstalling. Only to stop working again the next time I need it.
The HP "not so smart" app cant seem to find my printer even when adding by IP. I can ping my printer just fine though.
I can add by IP through Windows but when attempting to print, the job fails with an error-printing. No explanation on the nature of the failure.
The IP does not change (DHCP Reservation)
Whats the deal?

@PrintneverWORKS, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I understand you are not able to print wirelessly. Have you tried reinstalling the HP Smart app? Let us try these steps:
- Restart the router, the printer, and the PC
- Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
Install the printer using the TCP/IP port:
Check for any pending Windows updates first.
- On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Remove the existing printer entry > click on Add a printer(at the top)
- Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
- Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'
- Find the IP address of the printer by tapping on the wireless/ethernet icon on the printer screen
- Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
- Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.
Try printing.
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.
