Hi there,
I have been having an issue with my HP printer as it won't let me connect to my Mac. When I try to add the printer on it says 'Unable to connect to HP Envy 5540 series [6C38C7]._ipps._tcp.local due to an error. Would you still like to create this printer?'
A previous thread suggested using 'Network Utility' but that has now been deprecated.
I have two iMacs. Both were connected to the Envy 5546 successfully until today. One is running Big Sur 11.2.1 and I upgraded HP Smart here very recently. This one does not work now. The other is an older machine and it is still working. They are all on the same network and Network diagnostics shows up no problem.

Welcome to HP Support Community
I would like to help
I understand your concerns and I would like to help. We need to check few details first and we could try adding the printer as Airprint
- Do you have any Anti-virus software installed on your MAC? If you do, please deactivate it for now.
- Ensure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
-Note:- This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. Do not connect it to 5 GHz Network incase your Router supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, then the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
Please check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'. This is very important
Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.
Next ensure your Mac and Printer have the latest updates
Printer Firmware: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168
Mac update: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2015
After checking all those details and if the Ping Terminal test is successful, Remove and Re-add the printer using Airprint. AirPrint is an Apple technology that helps you create full-quality printed output without the need to download or install drivers.
1. Click Applications > Utilities > Terminal. 2. Type ping -c <number of times to ping> <IP address>
You can get the Printer's IP Address by printing a Network Configuration page or going to wireless settings on the printer control panel
1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
6.) Try to print
Airprint does work on this printer as per the Printer Specs https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-7740-wide-format-all-in-one-printer-series/768...
Let me know how it goes😊

Many thanks for your reply - partial success.
1. There is no Anti-virus software installed.
2. Both Macs and the printer are on the same network. I can't see any obvious way to distinguish 2.4GHz from 5 GHz but as the older iMac is happy and the printer was working until a few days ago on the new iMac I can't imagine this is a problem.
3. 'Bonjour packets' seems Ok - comes up on 'Add printer' - see below
4. I have not amended the printer firmware - - it is working on the other Mac and i can't think of anything changed on the new mac other than HP Smart.
5. Mac update: - dead link
6. I don't really understand the Terminal bit . I typed
ping -c <12><192.168.1.162>
and received
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `12'
7. I removed the printer and re-added it - I had a choice -Bonjour shared andBonjour Multifunct. The Bonjour shared link works fine - I am guessing this is piggy-backing off the old iMac
The Bonjour Multifunct - presumably a direct mac to printer link has the same problem as before- Unable to connect HP Envy 5540 ._ipps._tcp.local due to an error. I have screenshots but I can't see a way to attach them.

Curiouser and curiouser. Today I downloaded the new HP Smart software offered via App Store updates and took the opportunity to go through the process of setting up a new printer. Having gone through all the steps a big happy message pops up "We found your printer". However, when I click continue as requested the next message says "We're sorry , we could not find a printer to set up". Something, somewhere is very confused.
I tried the instructions for 'Try Again' - no dice.
Luckily the piggy-back system still works but it means I have to keep the old iMac on all the time.

Try assigning a manual IP Address and then reinstall the HP Smart App and go through the Setup
1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can print a Network Configuration page to obtain the IP address.
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
5) Click Manual IP
6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.
7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

@KrazyToad
I have tried two different browsers but the IP address is not available - "the server is not responding" or
"This site can’t be reached
xxx.1.162 took too long to respond."
The router, computer and printer all have the same IP address ave that the digits at the end are different.
The computer is: .132
the printer is: .162
the router is: .254
the old iMac is: .79

Many thanks to cut a long story short this has fixed the problem - "Printer Found", "Printer connected to Wifi" - printer added to list and functioning. Scanner also working. As an added bonus the printer is still working via the old iMac.
