HP Envy 6132e All-in-One Printer
Ubuntu LTS

Installed my NEW HP Envy 6132e onto my wifi network  and it printed its test page. It has also printed a 'Printer Status Report'. I have been unable to find any information from HP so I am appealing to this community for solutions. When I ask a pdf document to print the printer makes all the expected noises and I get a message on the PC telling me that it is printing. However, it does not print anything and after about 10 minutes I get a further PC message to tell me that the printing has finished! The only software changes have been a firmware update to the Envy 6132e to turn it into some sort of 'super printer'. At present it scans, but does not print. HELP

@RogerEH, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating, especially when it scans fine and even prints the test page, but won’t handle normal print jobs from Ubuntu. Let’s walk through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue on your Ubuntu LTS system:

Check Driver Setup

HP printers on Linux typically work best with the HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) package.

First, check your HPLIP version:

hp-info

If it's outdated or missing, update/install it:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install hplip hplip-gui

Important: If your version of Ubuntu LTS is older and doesn’t have the latest HPLIP version that supports the Envy 6132e, you may need to install HPLIP manually from HP’s official site.

Check Printer Status with HPLIP Tools

Open the GUI tool with:

hp-toolbox

This gives you a visual status of the printer and allows you to test printing, check queues, and diagnose problems.

Verify Print Queue and Logs

  • Check the print queue:

lpstat -t

  • Check CUPS logs for errors:

journalctl -u cups -n 50

  • Or open the CUPS web interface in a browser:

http://localhost:631

Go to “Printers”, find your Envy 6132e, and click “Maintenance > Print Test Page”. Does that print?

Try PDF Printing Workarounds

Ubuntu sometimes struggles with certain PDF renderers. Try printing using:

  • Evince (Document Viewer) — Sometimes fails with newer printers.
  • Okular or Master PDF Editor — These sometimes handle printing better.

Also, try converting the PDF to PostScript before printing:

pdftops mydocument.pdf
lp mydocument.ps

Check for "Driverless" IPP Printing Conflicts

Ubuntu may be trying to use IPP Everywhere (driverless) printing by default.

  1. Open Printers from Settings.
  2. Remove the existing Envy printer.
  3. Click Add Printer, and if two options appear (one with IPP and one that looks like an HP driver), choose the one marked as "HP Envy 6130 Series (hpcups)" or "hp", not "IPP Everywhere".

You may also disable driverless printing by blacklisting ippusbxd:

sudo systemctl stop ippusbxd
sudo systemctl disable ippusbxd

Then try adding the printer again.

Firmware Update Conflicts

HP firmware updates often lock out third-party cartridges or introduce restrictions. If you're using original HP cartridges, that shouldn't be the issue, but check if your printer is enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink. These services can restrict printing behavior. If it's enrolled, the printer might be waiting for HP account authentication or an internet connection.

Use HP Smart App or Web UI

Try accessing your printer via its IP:

  1. Open a browser and go to your printer’s IP (you can find this on the printer’s control panel or through your router).
  2. Check for errors, update settings, or reset network options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your help, unfortunately I am still without a printer and some of your suggestions get strange (to me) results.

My Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is maintained up to date automatically.

I did request HPLIP to update to the latest version via HP and it apparently did that.

There is no printer listed by HP LIP Tools. Therefore there was nothing to check the status of.

http://localhost:631/ still shows two printers and both are stated to be driverless, nothing about IPP.

The Maintenance Test Page did print.

The printer has been asking me if I would like to cancel a print for 10+ minutes, but will not respond to my touching of the blue Yes 'button'. Maybe I need to turn the printer off again to hopefully clear this new issue.

Loaded Okular, but it would not open a pdf!

Could not disable driverless printing as 'Unit ippusbxd.service not loaded'

The ink cartridges are those supplied with the printer, so I assume they are HP supplied as the printer came direct from HP.

When I checked for 'errors' using the printer IP in Firefox there were multiple errors listed, but I could not understand any of them.

I am sorry that I can not accept your answer as I still have a non-operational printer and I do not understand why.

My Envy 6132e remains 'locked' with a message on its small display asking if I wish to cancel a print, just as it was this morning. It still does not respond to my finger pressing the Yes in blue background. In all the places (e.g. http://localhost:631) I should be able to see the printer there is no printer, apart from sat on my desk. What do I do next?
