This is an HP LaserJet Pro M203dw printer that always has been connected by USB to my HP Windows 10 computer and has worked smoothly for a long time. Suddenly, today, it would not print. I went through all of the HP-suggested solutions carefully but to no avail, including trying another (and new) USB cable.
The printer simply does not print, failing when absolutely nothing had changed nor the cable stressed or anything of the sort. Furthermore, when plugged in to the computer, there no longer is the chime indicating a USB connection nor the different chime that sounds when a USB device is disconnected. Other USB devices (e.g., flash drives, external HDDs) work just fine as always.
Finally, this printer has been very well cared for.
What can be the problem?

Hi @Scumston,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating that your HP LaserJet Pro M203dw suddenly stopped connecting via USB. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
Check USB Ports: Since other devices work fine, try connecting the printer to a different USB port on your computer.
Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select it).
- Look for any entries under "Printers" or "Universal Serial Bus controllers" that have a yellow exclamation mark. If you see any, try updating or uninstalling the driver. Restart your computer to reinstall it automatically.
Power Cycle:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
Check Printer Settings:
- Ensure that the printer is set as the default printer. You can do this by going to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and selecting your printer.
Windows Update:
- Make sure your Windows is up to date. Sometimes updates can resolve connectivity issues.
Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Go to the HP website and download the latest drivers for your printer model. Uninstall the current drivers from your computer first before installing the new ones.
Try a Different Computer: If possible, connect the printer to another computer to see if it recognizes it. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or the computer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
