Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I have an Office Jet Pro 8130 series printer that I use for 2 different laptops, 1 is a Lenova ThinkPad and 1 is a Lenova ThinkBook. I never have any issues with the ThinkPad, but when I try to print from the ThinkBook I get a message it is offline even though it is not. I have to get up and go into the printer and unplug it and plug it back in. Then it will work. It's so annoying.  I have looked for answers online. The answer is always power it off and back on.  Who wants to do that every time they need to print something?????? Not me. I need a permanent fix. Can somebody tell me if I need to change a setting or download something?  Oh, and I've tried checking/unchecking the Print when offline or whatever it is and that makes no difference.

Hi @LindaKayeV,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130 series printer is having trouble maintaining a consistent connection with your Lenovo ThinkBook, causing it to appear offline. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve this issue permanently:

1. Update Printer Drivers:

Ensure you have the latest drivers installed on your Lenovo ThinkBook. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues.

  • Visit the HP Support website.
  • Download and install the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130 series printer.

2. Set a Static IP Address:

Setting a static IP address for your printer can help prevent it from going offline due to IP conflicts or DHCP issues.

  • Access your printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering its current IP address into a web browser.
  • Navigate to the Network section and find the option to set a manual (static) IP address.
  • Choose an IP address outside the range of your router’s DHCP assignments to avoid conflicts (e.g., 192.168.1.200).

3. Configure Printer Port:

Ensure your printer port configuration is correct on the Lenovo ThinkBook.

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your printer and select Printer properties.
  • Go to the Ports tab.
  • Ensure the correct port is selected (usually something like TCP/IP Port with the printer's IP address).
  • If the port says WSD, try changing it to a Standard TCP/IP Port.

4. Disable Printer Sleep Mode:

Sometimes, printers going into sleep mode can cause them to appear offline.

  • Access the printer’s control panel and look for the power or sleep mode settings.
  • Set the sleep mode to a longer duration or disable it if possible.

5. Firewall and Security Software:

Ensure that your firewall or security software on the Lenovo ThinkBook is not blocking the printer.

  • Temporarily disable the firewall/security software and check if the printer goes offline.
  • If it works with the firewall disabled, configure the firewall to allow the printer through.

6. Update Firmware:

Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer.

  • Visit the HP Support website.
  • Download and install any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130 series printer.

7. Reinstall Printer on ThinkBook:

Sometimes reinstalling the printer can resolve connectivity issues.

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Remove the printer.
  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add a printer or scanner and follow the prompts to reinstall your printer.

8. Check Network Settings:

Ensure both your Lenovo ThinkPad and ThinkBook are on the same network (2.4GHz vs. 5GHz can sometimes cause issues if the printer only supports one band).

9. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

HP provides a tool that can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning problems.

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support website.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

10. Disable SNMP Status:

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) settings can sometimes interfere with the printer status.

  • Go to Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your printer and select Printer properties.
  • Go to the Ports tab and select the port your printer is using.
  • Click Configure Port.
  • Uncheck the box for SNMP Status Enabled and click OK.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
