Hello,
I am receiving an error when trying to open the HP Scan Program that is literally driving me insane! I have re-installed my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One onto my new Windows 11 Pro laptop but have had so much trouble trying to get the scanner to work. The printer and other functions seem to have installed without issue and are working fine.
I downloaded the driver (full version) from the HP website, HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus/Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - N911a-n Full Feature Software and Driver. The version is 28.1.1312_1, 81.2 MB Release date May 18, 2022.
I ran Scan doctor no issues. When I attempted to scan from the printer or from the HP software, this alert pops up on my screen:
“Scanner communication cannot be established. Ensure your product is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If these conditions are correct, restart the product and try scanning again.
If you are installed using a cable connection (USB or ethernet), and share both ends of the cable are secure
If you install this printer by IP address, then you might need to update the IP address. Use the update IP address item in the start menu entry for the sprinter. If you are running firewall software, it may be blocking scan communication. Please visit www.hp.com/go/wirelessprinting for help configuring your firewall.”
I went to HP's site to see if my printer is supported, it's not on the list but i noticed a lot of older models are on there. If someone can tell me what I can try I would appreciate it.
Thank you!

It sounds like your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One is having trouble establishing scanner communication on Windows 11, despite installing the full driver package and running HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Since your printer isn't listed as officially supported, let's try some HP-specific troubleshooting steps.

1. Verify Connection Type
- If using USB, ensure the cable is securely connected to both the printer and computer.
- If using Wi-Fi, confirm the printer is connected to the same network as your laptop.
- If using Ethernet, check that both ends of the cable are properly inserted.
2. Update Printer IP Address
- Open HP Printer Assistant from the Start menu.
- Navigate to Printer Settings > Update IP Address.
- Enter the correct IP address for your printer (find it on the printer’s control panel under Network Settings).
3. Disable Firewall Blocking
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & Network Protection.
- Click Allow an app through firewall and ensure HP Scan is allowed.
4. Reset HP Scan Settings
- Open HP Scan and go to Settings > Reset to Default.
- Restart the printer and try scanning again.
