HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer

I have never had home internet service. Yet, I was able to print from my iPhone via Bluetooth connection. This changed in the fall. The printer demands that I first connect with a true home internet connection first which I do not have. HP support has not been able to address this simple issue. Is anyone else having this issue? Did you have to buy another printer? If so, which one? Thank you!

Hi @Tgp7

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with printing from your iPhone to your HP printer via Bluetooth since the fall, and the printer is now requiring a home internet connection to work. This could be due to changes in the way printers are handling wireless connections and their reliance on cloud-based printing services, which typically require an internet connection.

Here's what you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Use Direct Wireless Printing (Wi-Fi Direct)

Many HP printers support Wi-Fi Direct, which allows you to print from your iPhone directly to the printer without needing a router or a traditional internet connection. You can try this method if you haven't already:

Activate Wi-Fi Direct on your HP printer:

  1. On your printer’s control panel, go to Wireless Settings or Wi-Fi Direct.Enable Wi-Fi Direct (it might be called Direct Wireless Printing or Wi-Fi Direct).
  2. Take note of the Wi-Fi Direct network name and password.

Connect your iPhone to the printer:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.Go to Wi-Fi and look for the Wi-Fi Direct network of your printer.
  2. Connect to that network using the password provided on your printer.

Print from your iPhone:

  1. Open the document or photo you want to print.Tap the Share button, select Print, and choose your HP printer from the list.

This method bypasses the need for a traditional home internet connection. The downside is that you'll need to manually connect your iPhone to the printer's Wi-Fi Direct network each time you want to print, and it may limit your ability to use other Wi-Fi devices simultaneously.

2. Use Apple AirPrint

If your printer supports AirPrint, you can print over Wi-Fi without the need for a traditional home network. However, this usually requires a connection to a Wi-Fi network.

Check if your printer supports AirPrint: You can find this information in the printer's manual or on the HP website.

Print using AirPrint:

  1. Ensure your printer is connected to a Wi-Fi network (you don't need a full internet connection, just a local network). On your iPhone, open the app you want to print from (Photos, Safari, etc.).Tap the Share icon and then Print.Select your printer from the list, and it should print directly if AirPrint is enabled.

3. Use a USB or Wired Solution

If you're still having trouble with wireless printing and don't want to rely on Wi-Fi, you could consider using a USB-to-Lightning cable to connect your iPhone directly to your printer, if your printer supports direct connections.

4. HP Smart App

If the above methods aren't working, try using the HP Smart app on your iPhone to print. The app has built-in features to help you manage printer connections:

  1. Install the HP Smart app from the App Store if you haven't already.Open the app and add your printer if it’s not already listed.
  2. Use the app to print directly from your iPhone.

5. Reset Printer Network Settings

If the printer keeps demanding an internet connection, it may have become stuck in a configuration that requires it. You can try resetting your printer’s network settings to default:

  1. Reset the Network Settings:
    • On your printer’s control panel, find the Network Settings menu.Select Restore Network Defaults or Reset Network Settings.
  2. Reconnect to your printer’s Wi-Fi network (if using Wi-Fi Direct or AirPrint).

I hope this helps.
