HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

I recently bought and set up an HP Smart Tank 5101, but every time I try to print from Google Chrome, it shows me a "please wait for printer connection or cancel connection" message and doesn't continue on from there.

On HP Smart, it was able to print when the HP Smart system printing system showed up, but sometimes it tries to connect to Microsoft's printing system instead, where it isn't able to connect.

It's a bit bizarre, can anybody help me figure out a solution?

And also, is there absolutely no way to print double-sided? When I first got this printer a month ago a menu popped up on screen, saying it printed all the pages on one side, and then to reload the paper and click on the pop-up to print the other side. That option isn't appearing anymore.

@Ciceronian_25, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Can't print from Google Chrome

Set as Default Printer

Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Click on your HP Smart Tank 5101 and select Set as default.

Clear Print Queue

Go to Settings > Printers & scanners > HP printer.

Click Open print queue and cancel any stuck jobs.

Restart the Print Spooler

Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart.

Print from HP App Instead

Open the HP App.

Use it to print instead of Chrome directly.

Update Drivers

Go to HP Support and download the latest drivers for your model.

No more double-sided printing option

Manual Duplex Printing

Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

Right-click your printer > Printing preferences.

Look for Two-sided / Duplex printing and turn it on.

Print Using HP App

In the app, choose Print > More settings > Two-sided printing.

Follow on-screen steps to reload paper when asked.

Check for Updates

Open HP App.

Go to Settings > Printer Update and install if available.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

Thank you for the suggestions.

However none of them worked, and my computer still fails to connect to the printer.

Oddly there was nothing in my print queue, even after I clicked the print button for certain documents.

I should mention that when I tried to enter Printing Preferences and Print Test Page, nothing popped up, and nothing happened.

In HP Smart, when I tried to print a document on a computer, the Microsoft printing system popped up and again failed to connect.

Is this a software problem on my computer? Or is it a problem with the printer? I was also unable to connect with the Wi-Fi Direct network for the printer, saying "Can't connect to network."

Thanks.
