My HP envy 5640 all in one printer is connected to wifi, both my PC and the printer are on the same 2.4 wifi network, I can succesfully print test pages from the HP smart app and control panel. But for some reason I can only print documents/images etc. if I go to the control screen on the printer and select WiFi Direct> Wifi direct details> Wifi Direct settings> Connection method and no matter if I select Automatic or Manual whatever is in my queue will start to print after I toggle the setting. I can open a word document and hit print- Nothing. Toggle from automatic to manual. Prints. Close the document, open it again, and press print. Nothing. Toggle from manual to automatic. Prints. I went through all the standard trouble shooting and even deleted and reinstalled the device info from the pc and factory reset the printer and I have the same results.

Hi @L-t-Beady
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for the clear description of the issue. It sounds like your HP Envy 5640 is connecting to Wi-Fi and can print test pages, but regular print jobs from your PC only start printing after toggling the Wi-Fi Direct connection method on the printer.
Here are some steps to try that can help resolve this printing behavior:
Set the Printer as Default:
Make sure your HP Envy 5640 is set as the default printer on your PC. Sometimes print jobs get stuck if another device is set as default.
Remove Wi-Fi Direct Printing:
Since you’re connected via your Wi-Fi network, disable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer to avoid conflicts between network and Wi-Fi Direct connections.
Update Printer Drivers:
Download and install the latest full-feature printer driver from HP’s official site:
HP Envy 5640 Drivers & Software
Use HP App to Print:
Try sending print jobs directly through the HP Smart app instead of the default Windows print dialog to verify if the issue persists.

Clear Print Queue:
Clear any stuck print jobs in the Windows print queue before printing a new document.
Check Printer IP Address:
Confirm the printer’s IP address on your network (via printer control panel under network settings) matches the IP assigned in the Windows printer properties. If it doesn’t, update it.
Temporarily Disable Firewall/Security Software:
Sometimes security software blocks print jobs. Try temporarily disabling firewall or antivirus to see if printing works.
Restart Network Devices:
Restart your router, printer, and PC to refresh network communication.
If the problem continues after these steps, please let me know, and I can assist with more advanced troubleshooting.
