HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

Trying to print and get error message that states printer is in error state. Have tried powering off, unplugging, resetting router, restarting computer and nothing seems to work. This just started a couple days ago. Printer worked fine prior.

Hi @hilper,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 Printer is giving an error message.

Here are the most effective steps to take, in order:

1. Clear the Print Spooler (Stuck Jobs)

A corrupted print job often causes the "error state" message.

  • In Windows, search for and open Services.

  • Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.

  • Open File Explorer, go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files in that folder.

  • Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler and select Start

2. Reinstall Printer Drivers (Most Likely Solution)

Even if you haven't changed anything, driver corruption happens.

  • Uninstall: Go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program, and remove your HP printer software.

  • Remove Device: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer, and click Remove device.

  • Reinstall: Go to 123.hp.com to download the latest drivers for your model.

3. Verify Network Connection (If Wireless)

  • Ensure the printer's wireless light is solid blue, not flashing.

  • Print a Wireless Network Configuration page from your printer settings to confirm it has an IP address.

  • Crucial: Ensure your computer and printer are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network (e.g., check for 2.4GHz vs 5GHz).

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
