HP OfficeJet 5230 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have now spent almost SIX HOURS trying to get my HP Officejet 5230 to print wirelessly. I bought it about two years ago and it worked perfectly for about six months and then stopped working so I connected it by USB cable. Yesterday I had a big problem with the Spooler SubSystem and had to remove and re-install the drivers. I needed the cable for something else and decided that since this is a wireless printer I should set it to work by wireless.

I have tried just about everything and, given that instructions about how to do anything in Windows 10 NEVER correspond with what is on your computer I tried everything possible but no luck. In Windows main menu  I have two HP options, HP Smart and HP Help & Support. I tried one of these and then tried 'Diagnose & Fix' - it went through the motions, told me everything was just fine and did I want to print a test page? Yes, I said and the test page is now added to the queue of important documents that I need to print. The wireless is not working.

If I check the little screen on the printer it tells me everything is just fine and it is all connected.

By the way I have always been able to print anything sent from my phone - that is all working perfectly  - no problem.

I have no idea where else to look on my machine. I cannot believe this can be so difficult and so time consuming.

Anyway, if anyone can tell me how to make this HP printer print I would be extremely grateful.

@michaellambert, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I see that you are not able to print wireless from the computer. As you can print from your phone, it means the wireless radio in the printer is working fine.

  • Restart the router, the printer, and the PC
  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.

You may tap the wireless icon on the printer screen to check if the printer is connected to the right network.

Once connected, install the printer using the TCP/IP port:

Check for any pending Windows updates first.

  1. On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Remove the existing printer entry > click on Add a printer(at the top)
  2. Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  3. Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'
  4. Find the IP address of the printer by tapping on the wireless/ethernet icon on the printer screen
  5. Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
  6. Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.
  7. Try printing. Open File > Print.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.
