Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had many HP printers and printed from a document or through HP Smart.  I just got the HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP and the only way it's letting me print is by saving my doc, label, whatever, in a folder and then opening HP Smart, clicking Print and finding my saved doc to print.  If I just click Print (say in Adobe or print an email or whatever) and choose this printer, it does not print.  I've never had this happen before and know there has to be a way to just PRINT, simply, directly, whenever I want to print what I see.  What am I missing??!!

Hi @JodiCSR,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to have to go through so many steps to print with your new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP. Typically, you should be able to print directly from applications like Adobe or email clients without having to use HP Smart every time. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

Check Printer Installation:

  • Ensure that the printer is correctly installed on your computer. You might need to install the full software package from HP, not just the basic drivers. This can include utility software that helps manage print settings directly from your desktop applications.
  • Visit HP's official website, search for your printer model, and download the latest drivers and software.

Set as Default Printer:

  • Go to your computer's printer settings (you can search for "Printers & Scanners" in the Windows search bar or "Printers & Scanners" in System Preferences on a Mac).
  • Check if your HP Color LaserJet is set as the default printer. If it's not, set it as default. This tells the system to use this printer as the primary one for all printing tasks.

Check Printer Queue:

  • Open your printer queue (you can do this from the "Printers & Scanners" settings by selecting your printer and clicking on 'Open queue').
  • Check if there are any stuck print jobs. If there are, clear them by selecting and canceling them.

Print Directly from Application:

  • After ensuring your printer is set up and default, try printing directly from an application like Adobe Reader or your email client.
  • When you select 'Print,' make sure to select your HP printer from the list of available printers.

Printer Network Settings (if applicable):

  • If your printer is connected to a network, make sure it's connected to the same network as your computer. Sometimes printers can be seen by HP Smart through a network but aren't configured to receive direct prints from the PC.
  • If you're using WiFi, ensure that both the printer and computer have a stable connection. For testing purposes, try connecting the printer to the computer via a USB cable to see if that resolves the issue.

Firewall/Antivirus Settings:

  • Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings can block communication between your computer and the printer. Check your security software settings to ensure they aren't blocking the printer software.

Test Print:

  • After trying the above steps, do a test print from the application you want to print from (like Adobe or your email client).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
