Welcome to the HP Community --

Let's say, "No, that is not correct."

HP makes available several free applications - for example, HP Smart (when sourced from HP) --

These apps do not suddenly want money to use the application.

Microsoft - purveyor of the Windows Operating System - provides (for example) Microsoft Photos and a built-in descendant of the Viewer software, Printing Pictures.  Both free and both part of Windows.

Also for Windows

Irfanview provides an exceptional software experience that can be used for a variety of scan and print tasks, including custom print size, tiles, and the “Mirror” or horizontal flip function, and several other options not found elsewhere.

Yeah, but...

What if?

We do not know what kind of printer you have, what kind of device (computer, tablet, phone) you have, AND we do not know which application you are using.

If you are using a third party software / application that was free during a "Trial" period and your trial is over,

then

Yes --

Applications that cost money after trial periods can certainly want to charge you to continue to use their software.
