HP Envy 6120e All-in-One Printer

I have three printers, one at home and three in a shop.  The two in the shop print address labels on sticky label sheets and a packing list on plain A4, but the labels and packing lists sometimes get printed on the wrong printer.

So I want to rename the three printers in my app so that it's clear which is which.

The chatbot gave instructions but they don't work.  There is no option to edit the name as far as I can see.

I have manged to find somewhere on my account in my browser to add a description but this isn't synched with the app.

How do I rename the printers on the app?

Renaming Remote Printers in HP Smart App

Renaming your remote printer within the HP Smart app involves a specific process. If direct editing of printer information fields is not available, follow these alternative steps:

Using HP Smart App

  1. Open the HP Smart App:

    • Ensure you have the HP Smart app installed on your device. If not, download it from the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store, Google Play Store, or App Store.
  2. Select Your Printer:

    • On the app’s home screen, select your HP ENVY 6100e All-in-One Printer from the list of available printers.
  3. Manage HP Account:

    • Click the Account icon (either your initials or a person icon).
    • Sign in to your HP account if prompted.
  4. Enable Printer Access:

    • Under your Account Dashboard, click Solutions, then click Print Anywhere.
    • Ensure "Allow printing from anywhere" is enabled.
  5. Rename Printer via HP Smart Account:

    • Go back to the Account Dashboard in HP Smart.
    • Click on Printers or Devices listed under your account settings.
    • Select your printer and look for an option to edit the name.
    • If editable, enter the new name and save changes.

The simple method -

Check your application

  • Open HP Smart
  • Open Printer Settings
  • Check available Options
  • If the "Rename My Printer" option is listed, you can use it to create a "nickname" for your printer.

If the option is not to be found, it is not available.

Thanks for the information.  That confirms what I suspected and what I've done so far.

I know from the serial numbers which is the label printer and which is the packing slip printer, but I can't check the serial number when I select a printer for a job.  Instead, I see a list of three and one is already selected.

I thought the list was in the order in which I added the printers, which the latest at the top, but it seems this isn't right either, because if I use that logic I still end up printing on the wrong one.

Are these printers listed in the order added or in order of use i.e. the latest used one at the top?

You are welcome.

Were it mine to do, I'd open the App Settings > Feedback > and ask for the feature you want.

Will asking help to make it so?

Perhaps yes -- Whether we get what we want somewhat depends on the mechanisms and whether it's reasonable to rewrite the code enough to add a feature where it is not now available.  Personally I think it's worth asking but without the expectation that it will make a difference in the short run.  I'm fairly sure that after all this time, the app writers are aware of the desire for this feature.

In much that I am aware, Printers are ordered as added.

The order lasts as long as does the working configuration.

That means that if a printer is "lost" or "hidden" (removed), the order can change when that printer is next (re)added to the list of several other printers attached to the application.

You can check the Printer Information for the serial number or the assigned IP address .

Whether you want to check-ahead before submitting the job depends on your printer, your level of patience, and / or the need to make sure the job goes to the correct printer.

Be Aware ---

Printers that include extra PIN security must have that PIN entered to open certain parts of the app / printer, including the one that provides detailed information about the printer's serial number and IP address.

Windows

Open HP Smart

Select the printer you think you want to use

Click / Open Printer Settings

If / When asked, enter the printer PIN to access the settings

Thanks again for the suggestions.  I've checked the app but I don't see a Feeback option in the settings but I have added my suggestion to a review of the app.

I don't mind spending a few minutes checking that I'm sending the the right job to the right printer, but it beggars belief that they thought it would be acceptable for all remote printers to appear with identical names and no means to tell them apart other than faffing about looking up serial numbers.  I do wonder at times whether these developers ever speak to a customer.
