Hi @BizzyLizzy1815,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the Wireless Setup Wizard on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is locked, you can try the following steps to unlock it and connect the printer to your wireless network:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Reset Network Settings:

  • On the printer control panel, tap the Wireless icon.
  • Select Settings (gear icon), then choose Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • If the Wireless Setup Wizard is still locked, you may need to reset the network settings to restore access. To do this:
    • Tap the Setup button (gear icon).
    • Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
    • Choose Restore Network Settings or Restore Defaults.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause issues with wireless setup. You can check for updates via the printer’s control panel or by visiting the HP support website.

Use the HP Smart App:

  • Install the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • Open the app and follow the prompts to connect your printer to the wireless network. The app often provides a straightforward setup process that can bypass issues with the control panel.

Manually Enter Wireless Network Settings:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless settings.
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • If the option is still locked, try selecting Wi-Fi Direct and then return to the Wireless Setup Wizard.

Check for Any Printer Lock Settings:

  • Some printers have a security setting that might lock certain functions. Check the printer’s manual or settings menu for any security options that could be locking the Wireless Setup Wizard.

I hope this helps.
