I do not know which board that best fits your product issue, question or tip to pick.
In HP Smart, how dose one WAKE up a printer that is showing ‘Printer is Asleep’??
I can go to ‘Scan’ and scan a picture.
Open Notepad and put a word in and go to Print.
In bottom right corner I get an error informing me that the Printer is offline.
I open Print Queue while printing and I see a thin black line. Not the line that goes across in color then goes green when printing is complete. Have to click on the three dots right above the box & click on Cancel ALL to get the line to turn green.
The VPN in AVAST ONE is OFF.
About the system.
Laptop computer from ASUS, AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics 4.00 GHz.
The operating system is Windows 11 HOME.
The laptop is hardwired to a NetGear Nighthawk R7000P and is seeing the HPB08456 (HP ENVY Pro 6400 series) at IP address (Removed).
The question again is, how does one wake the printer up in HP Smart??

Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Well, it looks like your printer is in "nap mode" 💤, and we need to gently wake it up from its slumber. We’re on a mission to get that HP ENVY Pro 6400 series up and running like a champ 💪!
Let's dive into some troubleshooting steps and get your printer back on its toes.
Steps to Wake Up the Printer in HP Smart:
Check the Power Button:
- Make sure the printer is powered on. Press the Power button to wake it up if it’s in sleep mode. Many printers go into a low-power sleep mode after a period of inactivity, but a simple press of the button can usually wake it up.
Use HP Smart App to Wake It Up:
- Open HP Smart on your laptop.
- In the app, find your printer listed in the dashboard (it should show as your HP ENVY Pro 6400).
- If it’s showing "asleep" or "offline," try to click “Wake Up” or “Resume” within the HP Smart app. Some printers have a feature to wake them up remotely.
Check Printer's Connectivity:
- Ensure the printer is still connected to the same network as your laptop. If the printer has lost connection, it might not be able to wake up properly.
- Check the Wi-Fi settings on the printer, or open HP Smart to verify the printer’s network status.
Try Restarting Printer and Laptop:
- If all else fails, sometimes turning both devices off and on again can solve the issue.
- Power cycle the printer (turn it off, wait for 10 seconds, and then turn it back on).
- Restart your laptop and check if the printer wakes up afterward.

Clear the Print Queue:
- You mentioned seeing the “thin black line” when printing. This could indicate a job stuck in the queue.
- Open the Print Queue from the Devices and Printers menu in Windows 11. If there are any pending jobs, cancel them by clicking the three dots and selecting Cancel All.
Update Printer Firmware:
- An outdated firmware can sometimes lead to connectivity issues. In the HP Smart app, check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer and install them if necessary.
Printer’s Network Status:
- Make sure the printer is connected to your router via the correct IP address (looks like you already have this info). If the IP address has changed or is incorrect, you can reconfigure the printer’s Wi-Fi settings to fix it.
Check VPN Settings:
- Since your VPN in Avast One is off, that's one less thing to worry about. If the VPN had been on, it could have caused network conflicts, making your printer go offline.
Now that we’ve walked through all the steps to wake up your printer, it should be up and running smoothly! If the issue persists, feel free to reach out to me directly, and I’ll help you troubleshoot further. Let’s get this printer fully awake and ready to roll! ✨
Good luck, and don’t hesitate to contact me again if you need more help!
Take care and have a good day.

Garp_Senchau,
Clear the Print Queue: You mentioned seeing the “thin black line” when printing. This could indicate a job stuck in the queue. Yes, this is true. Thinking that if I sent a print job to the printer, then the printer would wake up and print. The printer does/did not. That is why the thin line in the print queue.
Open the Print Queue from the Devices and Printers menu in Windows 11. If there are any pending jobs, cancel them by clicking the three dots and selecting Cancel All.
This I have done many times.
Update Printer Firmware: An outdated firmware can sometimes lead to connectivity issues. In the HP Smart app, check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer and install them if necessary.
Went to the HP website (https://support.hp.com/lt-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16) and found out that the HP ENVY 6455 does have a firmware update available. Opened HP Smart and followed the instructions to update firmware. Printer says it is up to date.
This indicates that this is not the problem.
Printer’s Network Status: Make sure the printer is connected to your router via the correct IP address (looks like you already have this info). If the IP address has changed or is incorrect, you can reconfigure the printer’s Wi-Fi settings to fix it. The IP address has not changed and is correct.
Check VPN Settings: Since your VPN in Avast One is off, that's one less thing to worry about. If the VPN had been on, it could have caused network conflicts, making your printer go offline.
This I have learned that since we have owned this printer. If the printer is online, and will not print, then I know that I forgot to turn the VPN off. I did get ahold of AVAST One and ask about how to let the print through with the VPN on and was instructed on how to change the setting (Enable local device access when using VPN.) in AVAST One, and I did. This does not work on the HP ENVY 6455 that is not hardwired.
Now that we’ve walked through all the steps to wake up your printer, it should be up and running smoothly! If the issue persists, feel free to reach out to me directly, and I’ll help you troubleshoot further. Let’s get this printer fully awake and ready to roll! ✨
As of today, 17 February 2025, I am not convinced that the problem is solved. I am going to keep trying to use the print from this laptop computer to make sure that the HP ENVY 6455 keeps waking up when I try to send a print job.
Good luck, and don’t hesitate to contact me again if you need more help! Take care and have a good day. Problem solved? 🎉 Awesome! Thank you for the help.

If it’s showing "asleep" or "offline," try to click “Wake Up” or “Resume” within the HP Smart app.
Went into HP Smart and looked for 'Wake Up' or 'Resume' anywhere on the opening page where the different buttons are like SCAN.
Check Printer's Connectivity: Ensure the printer is still connected to the same network as your laptop.
Yes the printer is still connected to the network. Nothing has changed,
Check the Wi-Fi settings on the printer, or open HP Smart to verify the printer’s network status.
As can be seen, the printer is still 'Asleep'. If I send something to the printer, that does not changed.
Try Restarting Printer and Laptop: If all else fails, sometimes turning both devices off and on again can solve the issue. Power cycle the printer (turn it off, wait for 10 seconds, and then turn it back on). Restart your laptop and check if the printer wakes up afterward.
The printer is in basement to have to be restarting it every time.
Thank you for the help

@AlpineKid63, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for your detailed response
Updating the printer firmware and assigning a manual IP address to the printer may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:
Step 1: Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Step 2: disable Auto-off on the printer. Refer the User Guide and this document for more information to perform these steps
If the issue is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Assign a Manual IP address to the printer
• Obtain the IP address of the printer –
- From the printer control panel, press and hold the Information button until all the buttons light up, and then press ( i ) and (⬇️) at the same time to print the wireless network test report and network configuration page.
- Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer from the network configuration page.
- In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address or hostname assigned to the printer.
For example, if the IP address is 192.168.0.12, type the following address into a web browser: https://192.168.0.12
• Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
• Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
• Go to Network Setup > Ethernet/Wireless Settings > Advanced Settings > IP Settings > Select Manual IP
• You would be asked to enter the IP address, default gateway, Subnet Mask, Preferred and Alternate DNS
• For the IP address, say if your printer IP address is 192.168.0.3, try assigning a different IP address that is slightly in a different rage like 192.168.0.88
• Enter the default gateway and Subnet Mask values obtained from the network configuration page
• For the Preferred DNS use 8.8.8.8 and alternate DNS as 8.8.8.4
• Click OK and save changes.
To watch a Video as how to assign a manual IP, click here
Step 4: Factory defaults
To restore the printer to the original factory defaults
- Lift the cartridge access door to expose the cartridge area.
- While the cartridge access door is open, press and hold the Power button and Wireless button on the back of the printer for three seconds.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
