Welcome to the HP Community --
If you are talking about the printer's propensity to sit there minding its own business and then suddenly "go dark" and not respond, try checking / manually updating the Firmware using the printer control panel or EWS.
True -- To update the firmware, you have to catch the printer when it's actually awake and working.
If the printer is upset about it's firmware -- or just blathering error messages, these can be checked in EWS, too.
Examples
When my new OfficeJet Pro 9135e hangs up and won't budge, I unplug it for a minute - plug it back in and wait for it to boot.
Updating the printer firmware manually did help clear out the worst of the offenders that seemed to be causing the printer to "go off", "go dark", or "disappear into the abyss".
A solid connection to the network -- manual / static IP address -- helped, too.
Ethernet -- not using Wireless -- Decent and well configured router, too.
Includes the suggestion to update the Firmware...

Comments -- New printer stuff...
My new OfficeJet Pro 9135e is always kicking around firmware errors and messages that clog the log file.
