Hi @Aussieoldie57,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the HP DeskJet 2820e, like most HP printers, supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks and not 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks. This is a common limitation in many consumer-grade printers.
Here’s what you can do to resolve the issue:
1. Check if Your Router Supports Dual-Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)
- Many routers offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Log in to your router's settings and verify if the 2.4 GHz network is enabled.
- Look for the option to enable "dual-band" or "2.4 GHz Wi-Fi."
- If both bands are active, the printer will only connect to the 2.4 GHz band.
2. Ensure the 2.4 GHz Band Has a Unique Name (SSID)
- To avoid confusion between the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, rename the 2.4 GHz network to something distinct, such as "TPG-2.4GHz."
- After renaming, reconnect your devices to the appropriate network.
3. Reconnect the Printer
- Reset Network Settings on your printer:
- Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons on the printer for 5 seconds.
- The Wireless light will start blinking.
- Use the HP Smart app to reconnect the printer to your 2.4 GHz network:
- Open the HP Smart app on your device.
- Add a new printer, and follow the prompts to connect to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
4. Check Compatibility Settings
- Ensure the router is set to a compatible Wi-Fi mode:
- Modes like "802.11 b/g/n" are compatible with most HP printers.
- If it's set to "802.11ax" or "Wi-Fi 6" only, enable backward compatibility.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
